I took this shot last Nov the day after a hurricane was off the shore of Nova Scotia. I'm always looking for ways to improve - can anyone offer any suggestions?

I'm always looking for ways to improve - can anyone offer any suggestions? MB1 02-08-2008, 07:59 AM There isn't enough contrast in the B&W here-no pure whites and no strong blacks. Everything is a shade of grey and I think that hurts the result plus the whole image is a little soft as if there were a bit of camera movement or salt spray on the lens. I'd also like to see either less foreground or less sky as I think having the horizon that close to the center of the frame reduces the impace of this sea scape. jorger101 02-08-2008, 10:40 AM Stinger, I would definitely go back to that scene and take more pictures. Having a lighthouse as a subject is very exciting. I would observe the lighthouse at different times during the day and different days to see the possibilities. Xia_Ke 02-08-2008, 11:40 AM Hi Stinger, I like this shot a lot! Living a little South of you in Maine, I think you have just about perfectly captured that "morning after the storm" feeling along the coast here. I agree with MB1 that it is a little too gray but, nothing that couldn't easily be fixed in editing. It is a little soft but, I think it adds to that hazy, misty feeling that these mornings have. The only thing that I think might improve the shot would be if you caught some seagulls in flight or maybe if the lighthouse light was still on and you caught a glint of it. (I think I'd better edit my comment) I pretty much agree with some of what Aaron said except: 1. I don't find it too gray. 2. I wouldn't ask you to add some seagulls to the photo :) PrevailingConditions 02-08-2008, 03:31 PM Stinger, I'll add my vote along with Aaron - I like the shot. The composition is very nice. Good placement of the horizon and having the lighthouse to the side makes the shot more dynamic. I might be inclined to add a slight gradient to the sky to bring out some of the clouds, but that's just me. PC Greg McCary 02-08-2008, 05:21 PM I agree with the others there is to many mid tones and not enough contrast. Easily fixed in PPing. Could you show us the color version? The composition is very good. |
