To start off great site and forum thanks every one keep up the good work.

I have a Nikon d40 with a AF 18-55 lens kit.
i have had it a about a week now and am haveing a blast useing it.

Now here is the question.
If you are looking at the lens with the front of the lens facing you.
The 18-55 has 7 contacts. All in a row like this …….50731
I have seen the same lens with 8 contacts.
i did take a look at the other lens and it is a vr lens.
so you can see why i am asking what the diffrence is with the contacts if the lens has 7 and works fine then i get a lens with 8 contacts what is not going to work.

i also have a 70-300mm that the pattern is not the same as well it may be an older lens the af does not work with this lens other wise the lens works great.50732

What is the the difference between the 2?
Thanks!!

With the 18-55mm VR, I believe the extra contact is for the VR. Everything will work perfectly on that lens. On the 70-300mm, it has fewer contacts than both because it doesn't use AF-S to focus the lens. It requires a camera body that already has a focusing motor of it's own. There is also a little screw on the back of that lens that will rotate when you rotate the focus ring. On other Nikon bodies, that little camera AF motor drives the lens AF through that screw. In the AF-S lenses, like the 18-55mm, the lens has it's own internal motor for AF operation. Does that help?

thanks!
that it does it gives me some where to start.
i am just trying to get a good lens that will fill in the space after the 18-55 and provide a good range for wild life shots that i can not be that close to.

agian thanks WCpilot for the help.
