I own a Nikon D50 and have always downloaded photos with the camera. Yesterday, my computer would not recognize my camera and I am unable to download photos. Someone suggested that it would be better to use a USB Card Reader to download photos. I don't know anything about them, and don't know which one(s) I should compare. Can anyone suggest a reader that might cost me an arm, but not a leg?

I use a Sandisk 19 in 1 card reader... I think it costs about 25 dollars. I have had no problems with mine.

I used a cheapo from Walmart until we got a computer with slots and it worked fine.
Cost 9 or 10 bucks I think. They're all pretty much the same.
I got the Sandisk Extreme 3 and it downloads very fast. I had a cheapie but the pins kept bending when the CF card was not inserted just right.

The card readers are all pretty much the same - a card slot, a small circuit board, and a USB connector. There might be some differences in speed or quality depending on the brand, but the difference between a $10 walmart reader and a $40 name-brand reader aren't really that great.

Like the other MJS, I had a cheapie, but the pins bent on it. I'm now using a Sandisk CF card reader and it works great.
Like others said, they are all pretty much the same, and even a name brand one like Sandisk it pretty inexpensive.

I use Enter card reader, which is almost same as sandisk reader but costs much less than a sandisk. Using that Enter card reader for one and half year, no problem yet.
