Cassie1 11-12-2007, 09:26 AM I was going through my photos from summer 2006 and found this image of a puffin with sand eels in it's beak.
It was taken on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland.

mn shutterbug 11-12-2007, 12:10 PM Sweeeet shot. When I was in Alaska, I really wanted a picture of one. Problem was, every puffin I saw was buzzing by 90 mph. I really like this photo.
Cassie1 11-12-2007, 02:05 PM Thank you Knight and Mike. It was amazing how close we could get to them, you could go out to the Farne Islands on a boat trip which ran during the breeding season.
The Farne Islands have about 22 species of breeding seabirds including Guillemots, Razor Bills, Eider Ducks, 4 species of Terns and a staggering 70,000 Puffins.

Lovely shot. I tried to take one of these down in Torquay and failed miserably last year. Part of the reason why I now have a full blown DSLR.
Farne island is a must visit, on my to do list.

Loupey 11-13-2007, 03:04 AM Love those guys and love your image!
I must add that island to my to-go list. I've always wondered how they can keep adding to their stash without losing fish already in their beak.
Thanks for sharing.
Cassie1 11-13-2007, 03:54 AM Thank you Roger and Loupey. You will love the Farne Islands, there are so many seabirds sometimes you don't know which to shoot first.
scott-devon 11-13-2007, 04:12 AM Very nice shot Cassie. What an interesting and colourful bird, very cool.

Great shot. What gear did you use? Camera? Lens?
SmartWombat 11-13-2007, 11:03 AM Farne island is a must visit, on my to do list.
Sounds like a UK PR meet in the making - I'll come !
Cassie1 11-13-2007, 12:40 PM Thank you Scott. They are really comical little birds.
Speed. At the time I was using a Canon 20D, 70-200mm F2.8 IS USM and a Manfrotto 055 tripod. You can get so close to the puffins it's amazing, so that lens was perfect for me.

paulnj 11-18-2007, 04:45 PM Most puffin images are shot with that very setup due to them having very little fear so I hear.
This image is amazing because that is one of the hardest birds to get proper exposure on. Sweet image, great exposure!
Tonny 11-19-2007, 02:28 AM enjoyed it.thank u for sharing.
Cassie1 11-19-2007, 07:31 AM Thank you Paulnj and Tonny for your comments. I had to take quite a few before I was happy with the exposure.
Cassie.
Cassie, nice shot. I like the added feature of the eels and your background includes similar birds. Must have been a wonderful trip.

Loupey 11-28-2007, 05:05 AM Cassie - your shot deserved more time than it received last week due to technical difficulties. So PaulNJ and I agree that it would remain up for this week
paulnj 11-28-2007, 07:06 AM It wasn't easy to get him to agree.... we thumb wrestled for hours and he finally gave in
Cassie1 11-29-2007, 10:39 AM Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. :D
