I have a nikonD50 and when I take flash pictures I consistently get red eye. :mad: Does anyone know how I can fix the problem with my settings or what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for any help.

That's a problem with the built in flash as its so close to the lens that the reflection of the flash goes right into the lens.
Hints that I've used and read about are to have all the lights on in the room if you can...helps pupils be smaller so less reflection. Or try putting subject next to a window.
I try to take shots when they aren't looking at me.
Probably other things I can't think of right now but I don't worry about it much anymore with an external flash and elements does a good job of getting rid of it.

Does your camera have a red eye reduction mode in the flash menu? (most DSLRs do). It works by doing a little pre-flash which shuts the pupils down a little. It doesn't always stop the problem, but it usually helps.

The best way to avoid red eye is to not use the flash. I know that's not always an option, so the next best thing is to get the flash, away from the camera. If your using the built in flash, that's not an option either.

If you're using an accessory flash, you may want to invest in a flash bracket. This will move the flash up higher, and will help avoid the reflection coming straight back to your camera.

If those options don't work, there is always Photoshop.

John....I have Elements 2 - and lost the manual. I've been getting some red-eye with the G9 (with red-eye removal ON). I tried removing it with Elements 2 - but couldn't. Would you explain how to do it in case I'm doing something wrong? Thanks.

To be honest with you, I can't remember the last time I had to do this in PS. I don't shoot people very often. I know there is a red eye removal tool in PS, but if I remember correctly, it's kind of hit or miss and I'm not sure if it's in Elements or not.

I googled red eye removal in photoshop and found this tutorial. You can try this and see how it works.

If that doesn't work for you, google the topic and I'm sure you will find several other methods.

The easiest method is to use the PS plug-in Color Mechanic. It's a one step process. You can go to

for Digital Light and Color. I use their Picture Window Pro product instead of PS and this is built in. Color Mechanic is very, very nice for all sorts of things.

I remember using it in elements 2, Liz but its been a while since I got elements5.
There's a red eye removal tool which you then hover over the red eyes and click. I think it had a size option.
Elements 5 runs through all the pictures as you load them and does an auto removal.
Sort of strange but I guess it either works or I haven't had any red eyes.
I've never done anything as complicated as described in the link Mj posted.
