Light was pretty bad yesterday but caught the edge of a very threatening storm coming in from behind me. Liked the mood of the picture.

Schred me.....I have lots to learn.:D

Do you have a split ND filter? This would be the perfect shot for one as I think the foreground and more so the trees on the left are way too dark.

It needs something more in the foreground too (or just less foreground-you could crop much closer to the horizon as all that water adds little).

I am not sure if the lack of overall color works here but I am a bright bold intense colors kind of guy.....

I don't have an ND filter.

The storm caused the colors to move more to grey & dingy...which is how the picture came out.

I thought the wind & rain on the water in the foreground and the shapes it took was enouhg.......I guess not.

I'll play with the crop & I'll also try lightening the trees.

Thanks for the comments. I've never shot such a scene before.

I rarely shoot landscapes without one of my split ND filters. Most often I use the 2 stop version but I will also combine the 1 & 2 stops sometimes.....

Something no landscape photographer should be without.

BTW all those tow path pix I posted were shot with the 2 stop.

Your image has recreated the mood of the expected storm very well indeed. The water, especially with its slight movement, gives off a very cold feel and makes for a very good foreground.
By selecting the area around the dark trees you may well be able to show some detail with a a careful Levels adjustment but it is a nice image as it is and I would imagine a large print of this would look very well.

Hammer - nail ?
Or is it really necessary ?

I hardly ever use mine - I use the polariser a lot more.

Funny that.

Interesting abstract photo--it looks like a simple parallel planes painting with sea and land details superimposed. As a photo it looks like it might have been artificially made. The clouds don't look genuine.

Well I find it really helps with the strong light I like. Of course I don't enjoy doing any post processing, you could probably get the same results by taking 2 shots and combining them in PS but I have no interest in doing that.

I also carry a polarizer but rarely use it as it does strange things to the sky with the very wide angle lenses I like to use.

It's almost straight out of the camera.

A small adjustment to contrast and a crop.

Here is one a little later at a different place with no adjustments.
