View Full Version : Winter Blues
Alison 10-24-2007, 05:52 PM Yep, that's right, I have 'em.
All the kids are at home this week, the weather is awful, I have no money to take them anywhere, but, my oldest daughter bought me some flowers today so I took a picture
What do you think?

I think it is very pretty and that you have a good daughter.
I'd like just a touch more dof but that's just me.
Xia_Ke 10-24-2007, 06:11 PM Noticed today you reading my recent "toy" thread and was wondering you have been up to lately. Haven't noticed you posting so much. The Winter is no time for blues. It's a time that is filled with so much character.
As flower close-ups go, they don't get much better than this. DOF is spot on and love the mood that the rich blue offers. Only little thing I might change is the shadow in the lower left. Might get rid of that so that the shot has more of a feel of fading out instead of it appearing like it fades to a backdrop. I hope that makes sense. Having a few beers for the World Series :D

Alison 10-24-2007, 06:22 PM Thanks guys.
And there's me thinking shadows and highlights were a good thing :(
Back to the drawing board I guess.
I know what you mean about the fade though Aaron. I just tried it but it was speaking to me y'know. I guess it's a question of personal taste.

Yeah I was looking and wondering what the new toy was to be honest lol.
I only have snippets of time on here during the day because of my demanding kids.
Xia_Ke 10-24-2007, 06:28 PM ...I guess it's a question of personal taste...
Exactly. It really is a lovely shot as is. My comments just reflect more my own taste :o
Hope those kids don't run you too ragged and that you get to enjoy your new "toys" this Winter
Alison 10-24-2007, 06:41 PM and that you get to enjoy your new "toys" this Winter
Y'know what? I tried my 70-200 with this shot but it wasn't as sharp as my 50mm! My 50mm wins through again
Old Timer 10-24-2007, 06:59 PM Love it Ali! The selective DOF is spot on for my taste it just makes those rich blue tones all the more appealing in the rest of the image.
PrevailingConditions 10-24-2007, 08:38 PM Thanks guys.

Back to the drawing board I guess.
On the contrary, I believe they are a good thing. I like the shallow DOF and the exposure.

Alison 10-24-2007, 11:19 PM Thank you OT and PC :)
I like the colors and composition just fine but what this needs (as often happens on this site) is size. Since we are restricted in size here I just can't see as much of this as I would like.
So could you please enlarge it to at least 11x14 and send me a copy?
Thanks in advance,
Mark
:D
readingr 10-25-2007, 02:26 AM Alison,
As MB said this just needs to be a lot bigger, other than that lovely.

PS are you up for Kew Gardens 8th Dec?
Alison 10-25-2007, 02:48 AM Here's a larger version. Is this one big enough?

Not sure about that one being right in the heart of London isn't it?
I'm not a fan of going into London.
Old Timer 10-25-2007, 04:40 AM It's a wall hanger in my book. Love that large version.
Alison 10-25-2007, 05:01 AM A wall hanger?! Yippee!
Thank you sooooo much OT.
I sent it to my MIL this morning and she was stunned! She phoned me, told me she loves it and asked me to do her a version for her desktop

Alison,
I agree with OT this is stunning and when you do print make sure you print it on Canvas and very big it will be even more stunning.

petershin_95 10-26-2007, 01:38 AM Its a great pic... I wouldn't mind a little more DOF but this also looks great!

Beccy (my daughter), just walked into my study and saw this picture and said WOW I'd buy that especially if it came in a set of three with purple and pinky purple to supplement it.
Now that is a huge compliment from my daughter as she doesn't say that very often, I have only had it twice on the bluebell woods, and my 'scary man pic' which is my avatar.
Roger
Alison 10-26-2007, 05:06 PM Bluebell woods...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh *sighs*
I have 3 words to say about that picture...stunning, stunning, stunning!
Thank your daughter for the compliments on mine Roger and thank you for the idea of going for canvas.
I have actually asked my sisters if they would be kind enough to paint it for me.
I would also love them to paint bluebell woods too, if I have your permission :)
A very beautiful shot, Alison. I like everything about it, though even though I like the offset composition, it might be a bit too offset?

reverberation 10-27-2007, 01:07 AM I think that shot is perfect. The colors and dof combine to make this a striking image. I think it is as good as the first two wallpapers on my mac. Personally, I really like how cool the image is, though I think it is a great image to play around with color wise. Increasing the saturation of one color would affect the perception of the other color. I am thinking of a more yellow center. http://www.apple.com/pro/color/ this thread on the apple site has helped me question how I use color in my photographs.
gahspidy 10-27-2007, 06:03 PM I would not change a thing. DOF id perfect and the sharp area is super sharp. Would make a great card, poster, framed fine art etc. . .
lovely.
Xia_Ke 10-27-2007, 06:19 PM Congrats on the sticky Alison! Very worthy shot
SmartWombat 10-31-2007, 03:06 PM Oh yes.
I liked this when it was posted.
The light and dark in the centre of the flower is great, and it's so sharp.
Was it the 50mm, f/1.8 ?
Alison 10-31-2007, 04:51 PM Congrats on the sticky Alison! Very worthy shot
What?! Sticky?! I didn't even know!!! Yippee!!!
Thanks for the heads up Aaron.
Was it the 50mm, f/1.8 ?
Of course
Xia_Ke 10-31-2007, 05:02 PM Sticky? You got the Feature Photo dear  Congratulations. This is truly a lovely shot
Alison 11-01-2007, 12:25 AM Oh yeah!!! Thank you! Y'know I swear I walk around in limbo half the time LOL.
Greg McCary 11-01-2007, 01:35 PM  Awesome
