I was taking a video of my son as we sang happy birthday. When I played the video back, near the end, my son popped out and then popped back in the picture. The background remained the same. It was very strange. The best way I can think to explain it- If you are old enough to remember the TV show Bewitched, it was just like when Samantha would disappear and appear. The camera was on a tripod with nobody near it. I was also taking pictures with my digital camera. I don't know if the flash from the camera could have caused that effect, but why would everything else in the background stay? I hope someone can give me a logical explanation for this because it really freaked me out.

Sounds like a jump cut, like the camera was stopped momentarily and ran with him out of frame. You'd need to check the tape frame by frame to see if there was anything going on. I've heard of it happening on purpose, but not by accident. Maybe someone else has.

without seeing your tape frame by frame and or your timeline i would suggest he "faded" - see the book fade by robit cormier for details. seriously though like mjs said, it is most likely a jump cut. if you were rewinding the tape to watch it then recording more footage this would be the most likely explanation.
