The first one looks a little too contrasty and a little soft. Technically, the second one is much better, but the pose.....?

hahaha, the 2nd one is hillarious. I think you picked the right spot, with those small trees in teh back ground, it definitely gives off the feeling that he'd climbed a big mountain and just reached its peak.

I am not in a place to offer technical critique but I have to say that the second one is like no senior picture I have seen before. I love the goofy-ness with the beautiful scenery.

I have been working on my senior portraits, I think I would have warmed and sharpened the first one and called it good. Second one is for sure the winner here, don't be afraid to be brave.
I'd love to see that second one in a yearbook.
