John's given me the go ahead to get the project up and running. So, I decided to listen to my public and go with Michael's idea. I suspect he has something up his sleeve. Let's see what ya got
Have fun.

Just for clarification.... portraits focusing mainly upon the subject's eyes or are all portraits allowed?

When it comes to the projects, there really aren't any set rules. Post anything that you think fits in the "theme" of the project. It could be a portrait, it could be something with the letter I in it... It all depends on how you interpret the theme. At least that's how I have always aproached the projects.

Hope this fits.......not exactly a portrait - but hope these eyes will do until I find something better.

I said cars have eyes, the Citroen DS has cross-eyes.
The inner headlamps steer with the wheels.

Nicely done, I suppose product photos are a bit like portraiture with the control of lighting and background that you need for a shot like this.

P.S. we missed you today.

I don't have any of that lol. I used a sheet of A4 paper, window light and bounced flash :)

EXACTLY !

You created your own background.
You used bounce flash.
You were in control :)

Only a snapshot with the LZ5, no DSLRs were hurt taking this :D

I spotted a small dapple of light, and interrupted Mike.
"Up a bit, right, a bit, left a bit, down a little."
Finally I got his head in the right place to put the highlight on his eyes.

But did it work?
Alison?
If you'd been there you could have told me on the spot.

That's actually very good Paul. Were you having a discussion about me while you were taking this shot? I can hear you now, "If Ali were here..." LOL. Bless ya!
The catchlights and clarity in the eyes are superb!
Am I correct in assuming you weren't using your 50mm?

It stayed in my bag the whole day (guilty look).
I had the 10-22 on the 20D for wide angle, 24-70 on the 1DSII, 100-400 on the 1DIIN, and the Panasonic in my pocket.
With all those DSLRs, I picked up the Panasonic for this !

I found a cat in my shed, so, I couldn't resist taking a picture of it and having some fun with some selective colouring in photoshop.
And before anyone asks...it was taken with my 350D and my 17-40mm F/4 L lens, (before I got my 40D).

I nearly forgot to add an image to project this month. Here are a pair of Texas eyes that won my heart this month. Meet Josh on his first birthday.

Couldn't resist this one.
Oh all right, these two.

Thought I'd add the full image, so you can see where the feather came from :D

Oh Alison, this was taken with the 580EXII flash.
I used a Lastolite Apollo XL softbox on the flash to diffuse the light, I think it worked on the black kitten?
The softbox makes the camera/flash unwieldy, but since it's bigger than the kitten it's good for shadows.

Alison
09-22-2007, 11:42 AM
Lovin' your grandson's eyes OT. 50mm I presume?

I love the diffused flash there Paul. Where did you buy your soft box from?

SmartWombat

Where did you buy your soft box from?
I use Warehouse Express online, good prices and fast delivery.
Ordered Tuesday 11pm, arrived Friday before 9am.

The velcro they supply has appallingly unsticky adhesive, I replaced it with decent stuff.
In the end I'm going to use velcro adjustable straps (must buy more) because it tends to sag.
Find for closeups of the cats, but not so good for other uses like portraits I guess.

Thanks for the welcome. He is my oldest son Brett, I have learned so much from these forums. First lesson- it is easy to lose objectivity when you love the subject. :) I can see now that the lighting seems flat - but I love the expression. It was nice to capture something other than the typical teen scowl.
I am looking forward to the October project.

Just had to post another of my baby girl.
I am in love with her gorgeous big dark eyes. Or, liquid eyes, as OT likes to call them
