Hi all, new to the forum and have a few questions.

This question has probably been asked many times and if so please direct me to the correct location of its awnser. But here goes:

In your opinions is the Canon Rebel XTi really worth the extra $200 over the XT?

The camera is mostly for the hobbie, but I would like something atleast a little professional, incase I do decide to take it a step further. I relize that the sensor is a bit larger in the XTi but does the extra 2.1 MP's really make a difference in quality when your not making it poster size?

I was also wondering what the longest exsposure time would be in bulb mode? I read that the shutter speeds very from 1/4000 to 30 sec. but those are just the presets, right? You CAN take longer exposures, right?

Welcome to the Forum. I believe that the XTi is worth the extra $ over the XT. The image quality and high ISO performance of the XTi is better, I believe the auto focus was updated on the XTi as well, and it also has the sensor cleaning technology. I think it also has a larger LCD screen. If those updates mean much to you, then the XTi is probibly woth the extra $, if not, then go with the XT. Both are very good cameras, and will serve you well.

Go to a store and get your hands on both of them. I think the XTi is a little smaller than the XT so one might feel better than the other.

yes you can take longer exposures with both cameras with the bulb setting, I've taken 25 minute exposures, and the exposure time is essentially unlimited, you can get a cable release for these on the cheap. (mine was like $10 shipped on ebay)

Another difference is the 3fps burst, the XT lets you shoot up to 5 RAW files in a row before the buffer runs out and you have to wait for it to write the images to a card, the XTI up to 10. (for high quality jpegs, I think it's 9 vs 27.)

And another: up to 9999 images in a folder, so instead of 4 folders from a shoot on your card, you just have 1.

Thank you very much for your response in such short time. The XTi does seem to be worth the extra bit of cash. And mjs1973 I think I will go and get some first hand experience with them both in store before I make my decision.

The thing that is confusing me is that a few reviews I have read favor the XT, even with all of the new features the XTi has. CNet called the XTi a "disappointing followup" to the XT .... has anyone used both? I like the self-cleaning feature and the extra megapixels, but is it that much more advanced?

I hate making decisions.... :confused:

I bought an XT as an upgrade to my old 10D, and am quite happy with it. I like the flash system, in particular. E-TTL II is MUCH better than the previous incarnation. Personally, the extra $200 would be better in my pocket, as the XTi doesn't have "enough" of an upgrade over the XT to make it worthwhile to me. They are both very capable cameras, of course.

I felt that the XTi was definitely worth the extra cash, mostly for the improved AF and the larger LCD. there's also the larger buffer, and the more user-friendly aspects of the menus... however, keep in mind to budget some additional money for a better lens than the stock one, as it's relatively poor. people can (and have) gotten decent pictures out of it, but you'll be pretty limited by it right out of the box. figure on ~$300 for something decent (Sigma 17-70 is a good choice, as are the slightly more expensive Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 or the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8), but many people forget to budget anything for the lens and then wonder why their pictures don't look that great. so basically, if you can afford an XTi and a decent lens, by all means go for it as I love mine. If you can't, I'd say get the XT and spend the extra money on some decent glass instead. :)

I have an XT and I am happy with it. My father just bought the XTi and it has some features that I would have paid extra for at the time (sensor cleaning, larger LCD), but it is not enough to make me upgrade to the new model. If I were buying one new, I would definately go with the XTi.

The $200 will come real close to buying a 430EX flash.
