View Full Version : The Green Gorge - Pewitt's Nest
mjs1973 06-24-2007, 04:24 PM I got up early yesterday morning and took a trip to a state natural area called Pewitt's Nest. I had less than 1 hour before I had to leave to go help a friend move. I had this place completely to myself, and I could have stayed here all day!!!
WesternGuy 06-24-2007, 04:36 PM mjs, wonderful pics. I love the green on the rocks (assuming it is a type of moss).
Cheers,
WesternGuy
scott-devon 06-24-2007, 04:45 PM Beautiful! Great shots there, I can see why you'd want to spend the day there.
Xia_Ke 06-24-2007, 05:20 PM WOW! I want a place like that near me :( Awesome shots, every last one of them!
mjs1973 06-24-2007, 05:49 PM Thanks WG, Scott & Aaron. This is a wonderful place to visit, and photograph. I plan on going back when I have more time. Hopefully, people will respect this property so it will stay open to the public.
WG, yes, that's moss growing on the rocks.
Aaron, thanks for posting a comment in my gallery also.
mjs1973 06-24-2007, 06:21 PM Here is one from the same place, taken last fall.

WsW-WYATT-EARP 06-24-2007, 06:39 PM AMAZING Michael !!!! I have never heard of the place but as said already easy to understand how you could spend the day there.
mjs1973 06-24-2007, 07:03 PM Thank Ben. If you're ever in the Baraboo area, let me know, and I'll give you directions. It's only about a mile outside of Baraboo.
WsW-WYATT-EARP 06-24-2007, 07:05 PM Pretty close to the crack house ... I mean casino then :D

Not too far from there. If you turn west on Cnty W at Walmart, it's right outside of town. I bet the majority of people drive right past it, and don't even know it's there.
julsoph 06-25-2007, 05:38 AM I like the 2nd to last one...it looks like the moss on the rocks is almost a waterfall itself.

mjs1973 06-25-2007, 12:15 PM Thanks for looking and commenting Emily!
mjs1973 06-25-2007, 12:21 PM I just read a news article about this location. Apparently a 25 year old man suffered life threatening injuries after jumping into the pools of water at this location. This happened about 12 hours after I took these photos. I have seen people do this before, but nobody got hurt. The pool of water at the base of the last waterfall is about 30 feet deep, and people like to jump off of the cliff, into the water. There are now signs up in the parking lot, and along the trail to the cliffs warning people not to climb, or jump from the cliffs, or they could face fines, and the property could be closed to the public. It's jackass's like this who are going to make great natural areas like Pewitt's Nest, off limits for the rest of us. :mad2:
Xia_Ke 06-25-2007, 01:39 PM Sorry to hear about that Michael. I hate people like that. There are a couple landowners in my area that no longer allow public use of their hiking trails due to littering and destruction of property. I'll second your :mad2:
Knight 06-25-2007, 03:25 PM Thanks for showing us a piece of heaven on earth Michael O'Canon . Good series :)
Loupey 06-25-2007, 03:53 PM Looks like a tranquil place for sure.
Unfortunately, with an injury and a story in the paper, I doubt that this spot will remain unspoiled for long. Be glad that you got the shots you did when you did.
Thanks for sharing these.
mjs1973 06-27-2007, 03:21 PM UPDATE:
I was talking to a coworker yesterday, and told him about the guy getting hurt at this location on Saturday. He told me that he was there on Sunday, and saw police, and EMT's there taking photos. I'm assuming they were there to document the scene of the accident. He said there were people jumping off the cliffs WHILE the police and EMT's were there taking their photos. I guess the cop didn't read the sign either...
agtaylor 06-27-2007, 04:59 PM Wow, those are nice, just saw them. Like the fall one the best. How do you get that sort of blur on the water where its sorta bluish? Longer exposure? I was taking similar shots and was going for that but couldnt quite get it.
mjs1973 06-27-2007, 05:49 PM Thanks Agtaylor. Yes, the blur is caused by using a long shutter speed. The photo from last fall was a 2.5 second exposure. A tripod is required, and I also use a cable release to eliminate camera shake. Not sure what caused the blueish tint to the water. Could just be a result of the lighting, or it could be a result of boosting the saturation.

Enjoy your trip Ben. I was thinking about going there this weekend myself. If you don't know where it is, take a left on on W as you come into town on 12. Go out of town, and the road will make a 90 degree curve to the left, then about a 1/4 mile or so, it will make a 90 degree curve to the right. Right on that second curve, there is a small driveway and parking lot on your left. That's it! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come home with.
