This looks like a sort of stereoscopic image. That is, two images that when combined by the mind, become a 3D image. I stared at this for a while and I finally came up with one idea: it's the two pictures from the old Viewmaster toy. You must understand how the brain interprets what the two eyes see. We do not see the same image through each eye. The eyes are a small distance apart; if you alternately close one eye and then the other, you will notice that they are two different 2-dimensional images. When you open both eyes, the brain is seeing both images and combining them into one 3-dimensional image. So when they make those Viewmaster discs, they make images of each scene from two slightly different viewpoints that match the position of each eye. These two images are put in the disc, and when you view them simultaneously, you see in 3D, even though you're not really seeing a 3-dimensional image.
So what this image looks like is the two different viewpoints from a Viewmaster. I'm not saying a Viewmaster took these shots, but they're the same image from two different viewpoints. It's the same kind of style/technique. These are a bit farther apart than the human eyes, of coruse, but still are the same effect. Imagine that your eyes are suddenly two or three feet apart. This picture is an example of how you might see.
How to make this image? Either more than one lens or some sort of mirror trick. I lean toward the mirror trick theory.

those are 2 seperate images with different perspective and camera angle FROM A 1/2 FRAME CAMERA :)

that would make sense in that picture. but the photographer had more of those kinds of images. and they had two different images. is it possible to take one picture and then another later and have them both in the same negative?
