View Full Version : June Photo Project: Window light Alison 06-04-2007, 03:09 PM Well...what did you expect? Alison 06-04-2007, 03:11 PM Just to confirm, it DOES NOT have to be a portrait. It can be anything window light related  JETA 06-04-2007, 04:08 PM For us who are noobs, can you explain what window light is exactly. TIA! swmdrayfan 06-04-2007, 08:00 PM Light coming thru a window. WsW-WYATT-EARP 06-04-2007, 09:02 PM no flash .... we all know alison uses reflectors though:thumbsup: Alison 06-04-2007, 11:29 PM no flash .... we all know alison uses reflectors though:thumbsup: Nope not all the time. 9 times out of 10 I use window light only. If I use a reflector I usually say so. I would give some more examples but most of my window light shots are portraits. I better get taking some new ones of different things. readingr 06-05-2007, 12:37 AM Here goes my first! Need to check with the boss why we still have a Christmas decoration out. Roger Alison 06-05-2007, 01:38 AM Ok. So it's kind of a portrait I guess (sorry). Here's my son on a train ride :D And a shot of the toothbrushes on my bathroom window sill. almo 06-05-2007, 02:46 AM A couple I did last night after Ali clued me in to the new project theme. I didn't mean it that you use reflectors all the time ... sorry if it sounded that way ... Alison 06-05-2007, 07:19 AM It's ok Ben don't worry. I had a go with my gold reflector yesterday although it was totally outdoors so I can't post it in here :( JETA 06-05-2007, 08:02 AM Thanks for the explanation. I'm enjoying this board because it is broadening my hobbiest horizons. Thanks again. Axle 06-05-2007, 08:12 AM Here are some that I was able to drag out of a friend's facebook (yes these are my photos). I took these for said friend for their mom's Christmas gift. Can be found most days on the back of the couch looking out the window. He was nice enough to let me takes some pics of him again today. Here's one I liked a lot because of the reflection in on his eye. Liz 06-05-2007, 10:49 AM The light is actually from the late afternoon sun coming through the window to the other side of the room. The 2nd one is a crop. I'm still learning ... Paul, That last one - the portrait - looks good to me. Liz SmartWombat 06-05-2007, 03:44 PM Not quite there, but almost. His nose is lost in the cheek highlight. I should have sat a couple of chairs to the right. Shooting from the shadow side the contrast was too high, and I had to work very hard in Lightroom to recover the shadow detail. It's on the edge of usability because of the line pattern noise that is perhaps hidden at this resolution. Can you tell I cheated in the first one? SmartWombat 06-05-2007, 03:45 PM OK then, I will play the non-portrait card :) Liz 06-05-2007, 04:00 PM I really like that last photo - the room with the windows. I love the reflection on the right - and the door. Very nice. About the first portrait and your question Can you tell I cheated in the first one? No......because I don't quite "get it" Liz JETA 06-05-2007, 04:13 PM OK. Bear with me here. Liz SmartWombat 06-06-2007, 01:11 PM Can you tell I cheated in the first one? No......because I don't quite "get it" Well, I don't think fill flash is window light :o Axle 06-07-2007, 05:43 AM Thanks for the kind comments! Here's a couple more from Lister... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/178/429408129_4687693426.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/axle81401/429408129/) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/164/429407593_b6d96d778c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/axle81401/429407593/) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/175/429407679_4ac347458b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/axle81401/429407679/) The unfortunate fact is that no one can get shots like these anymore. Like many locations Lister Block have been sealed up, and now has a guard there from 7am to 11pm. So the only time to go inside is late at night and there's no light coming in from the outside. And one more from the Crystal Ballroom http://farm1.static.flickr.com/176/426195837_cbacd3e863.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/axle81401/426195837/) The ballroom was added to the Hotel in 1921 (the actual hotel was built in 1903), and has stood empty since 1951. Access is hit and miss, but if you ask nicely at the front desk they may bring you up there. almo 06-07-2007, 03:49 PM Man, this is a difficult theme for me.
