I'm looking to get a teleconverter for a Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 Ai-S, non IF. Anybody have any recommendations? Also, I've noticed some say for a protruding rear element and others say for a recessed rear element? I'm assuming this is a recessed element (see pic) Thanks again everyone for helping out the new guy :o

I used to have a similar lens - actually it came as an "ED" or a non ED version. ED is extra low dispersion glass, check this thread (http://forums.photographyreview.com/showthread.php?t=31759). The ED had a gold band around the focusing ring. Fantastic lens. IF is internal focusing and the autofocus lens that replaced this lens had it. A fair amount of autofocus lenses have it, but I don't believe that's the case with manual focus lenses.

Anyway, it's a recessed rear element. The problem can be that with a protruding rear element, that element might touch the front element of the teleconverter which wouldn't be too good...

Thanks another view :) To be honest, I'm not even 100% on which model I have. I bought it used and it is in mint condition. Perfect glass and only like 2 small scratches on the barrel. For $120 I figured I couldn't go wrong. I did some searching to try and find which model exactly it was and the Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 Ai-S seemed to be a match. Here's a couple pics, maybe someone knows for sure??? It's serial number 486103 if that helps.

That's the non-ED but I hear it's a very good lens. According to the Nikon Compendium, I'm not sure that it's Ai-S because the minimum aperture is f22 (versus f32 for the Ai-S versions they list). This really means nothing IMO - I rarely shot mine at f8 or smaller, and Ai-S only benefits a couple of cameras ('80's film bodies). I know the FA is one of them but can't offhand remember the others. Ancient history, anyway.

Great deal on the lens! Mine looked like it went thru a war.

Hmmm, found a site with full history/model breakdown by serial number. Turns out it's a K mount :o
