Okay, so for digital I guess it's not a real wide angle lens but, I just picked up a Tokina AF235 20-35mm lens. This is the first series, 72mm filter size. All is fine without the hood but, once I attach the hood, the AF can't get a reading as the hood is in the way (I assume this is the reason). Any suggestions on how to get around this?

That shouldn't be the case. The hood should not be entering into the image circle at all on film, much less on digital, and all the focus points are moderately distant from the frame edges even then. Do you have another lens that you can take a picture of the lens/hood combo, and the lens without the hood on? Maybe we can spot a problem, because unless it's the wrong hood, it should not be in your viewfinder or camera images.
