I'm really just playing around with my new camera...I have to relearn a LOT about photography, since it's been about 7 years since I've really done anything...This is a picture of my mom and my son swimming (yeah, she has a goofy expression on her face).

I'm not sure why, but i like this. Interesting water texture, was this a pond or a pool? And did you do any photo shopping to it? I'd like to see it cropped a little tighter at the top.

No photoshopping or cropping...just made the image smaller. And it was an indoor pool.

I think this is one of those picture that could have benefitted from a centered composition (although i do not like centered subjects)...

Also, it would have been nice if you had more light coming from top right of the image (just pointing to a location)....but i guess you had to work with what you had...

Making them into complete silhouettes would be better in my opinion....

Hope this helps,

I like this. I like how you cannot see the edge of the pool, so it looks like a large, undefined, even somewhat mysterious body of water. I like the lighting, the colors, and I don't feel centering the subjects would be a significant improvement. However, it might be a more effective crop to have the subjects occupy much more of the photo.

Hi - I totally agree with Marc that this particular shot would be perfect for a center composition. In these situations, you want the subject(s) to take totally command of the photo and not let anything else distract. What better way than a dead-center framing? (Note that this is usually not the case - you often want to use one of the other compositional 'rules' like thirds, etc.) I think the water ripples are REALLY nice!! The depth of field is also very good.

Here it is with the picture centered (using the edge of their backs as a marker..I ignored her ponytail for this purpose...I got it as close as I could in my exhausted state ;)), and with a teensy amount cropped off the top.

(edit: and of course looking at it now, I didn't crop enough from the side, I don't think. I'll try it again later, when I'm less tired. Oh yeah, you all are free to mess with my photo in any way you please :p)
