This fine gentelman saw me downtown today with my camera an insisted that I take his picture. He didn't have to twist my arm. He is quiet a character for sure. He wants me to bring him a print as well. How did I do at my first attemp at street photography? I took this wih a Canon QL-17 GIII Fuji iso100 1/250 @ 5.6. I converted to B&W in channel mixer.

I think you did quite well here, Greg. It looks very good. If you do get another chance at it, see if you can find something in the bg that can go along with, or enhance the idea behind the character . Maybe a sign or billboard that says something, or a scene on the street that shows the environment he is in and maybe how set aside he is from the general population, etc.
You done well here. This is very good.

2 things i have to say:

1- I agree with Gary....mostly because of the second thing i have to say

2- I am sooooooo envious..... damn....i wish i get a character like him come up to me.... i say go down there for the print....and give him a couple of rolls (or GB if you wanna go digital) of shoots.... all of them.... spare not one shot you can take....

nice effort.... I love the B&W conversion (there are many ways to do that)... and well, i would also like to see him in color... but that's up to you...

Don, Gary and Marc, Thanks for the critiques. Gary I will try and keep your suggestions in mind. I have a feeling I will meet this fine gentleman again. I had him a couple of prints made for the next time I see him.

I think you know what I am going to say. Black and white requires better tones and in this case some postprocessing to brighten the image. The fact that his eyes are closed or almost closed is also a problem for a people shot.

On the other hand it is obvious from your shot that he is a street character and you have certainly caught the character part.

I also have a color version of this as well in my gallery. I know from these forums how important the eyes are and was one of the things I was trying to remember while I was taking his picture,but this is as open as they got the whole time I was talking with him. But I found out today that his name is Junior, even though I haven't found him I did leave him his prints, one color and one B&W, at a place where he is known to go. Thanks again for your comments.

Great capture. this reminds me of going downtown and some shady character pops out of nowhere and asks the most random questions ever. good emotion in this shot.

Nice capture Greg. You sure got lucky to have this fellow offer to be a subject. There is so much to work with here. It would be great if you could work with him again. I like this a lot though, it shows emotion, the tones are good.

Gary summed up all I was going to add, I would add some street furniture that shows the hardship he faces.

I would also get a close up portrait of that face, so much character.

Still a good photo though.

afdlips,CF and Rodger, Thanks for your comments. He was quiet the cut up and I had to slow him down just for this one picture. I was at the end of the roll and was worried about the outcome. He also had a friend with him that wondered off as I was taking this picture, Maybe I will run into the both of them again and have another shot at the both of them...
