Western Scotland?

Decent shot, but the whitish clouds at the top of the hill leads your eyes to it. Seems that there should be something there that acts as a subject. Hmm. Or some cows in the foreground maybe.

I have an aesthetic problem with this photo which is similar to the Fawley photos I posted yesterday.

I like the picture but there isn't anything to latch onto as a story. I do like the concept and the location looks wonderful, and the prefect amount of snow in my opinion.

Technically, personally I would have less dark foreground and put the river more into the lower corner on the right, by moving forward, if that was possible?

The sky is distracting being so blown out.

The colours on the other hand are excellent.

I am not sure what I can add that would help since you are not a believer in post processing, But the image seems to lack detail. Maybe a tripod would have helped, maybe it's camera shake that I am seeing. Your horizon also appears to be leaning to the left and as you admit the blown out sky doesn't help. But an interesting subject...

i rented a cottage in the highlands for a week just to see scotland in the winter.. the condtions varied from heavy rain and floods to snow and gale force winds.. he he

the photographic conditions were pretty bad.. i used a 28mm prime lens with a cokin graduated filter for most of the landscapes but still struggled to keep any semblance of sky.. without the grad u really are talking impossiblity..

trying to keep the "winter".look seems to mean keeping dull colours a side affect of which seems to be detail (sharpness) gets lost.. landscape detail seems to need bright sunlight and blue skies..

there is an easy post processing answer for skies where just mountain tops are involved.. a magic wand tool and useing layering remove the bad one and clone a library sky in.. i have folder full of "skies".. but as u know i try and avoid such things.. he he

i am not totally against faking picture when it really matters i just try and avoid it..

floods in the valleys and snow on the hills.. i do have a few hundred pics some of them are good.. most just average..

ps.. its hard to find anything flat horizon wise in the Scottish highlands greg.. which helps me cos i am a bit careless with such things.. he he

thanks roger.. my truck was on the side i am on.. i had aready ignored the road closed signs and driven thru from the other side.. he he..

but scotland in the winter has some wonderfull photo opertunites.. just a shame its so dam cold and wet.. mind u it can be nearly as bad in the summer and then there is the "midges"..
