D200 with a Sigma 50/2.8 macro. 400 ASA 1/60, f/11 with auto fill flash. What do you think?

Go shot but I would of liked a little more DOF. But you may not of been able to get it.

Solid first effort. You've been at this a while to be jsut trying macros. It's challenging but fun. The 50mm is a nice lens, but it's easier to work with something longer. I have used a 90mm Tamron a ton -- almost always with a 1.4x TC. It broke and I replaced it with a Nikon 60mm, which is too short for butterflies and such. I'm thinking about the Nikon 200mm micro now.

I agree, with LL. It's hard to get close enough with 50mm. The colors are nice, and it's sharp enough within the DOF. Perhaps a softbox or diffuser on that flash, but I still think it's a nice first try.

Thanks gentlemen. I actually had the new Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro but couldn't get to it until after the shoot. The SB800 was on a cord, right next to the lens hood with the difuser on. I spot metered the sucker and got the shot right before he flew off. Can't wait to try the tokina with some macro stuff, mostly got it for portrait work in my too short to use the 80-200 studio.

i am surprized u got it moslty in focus at F11.. the sigma 70 x 300 or tamron equivalent does nice 1:2 butterfly or small flower sized macros from about two feet away.. perfect for shots like that one.. u dont need a true 1:1 macro for butterfly sized things..
