View Full Version : What is your other hobby?
BMWJNKY 12-27-2006, 09:01 PM So, I was wondering what everyone else does when they arn't behind their cameras.
My main hobby is cars and road racing. I've helped out on a couple pro racing teams and the team I helped out this last season finished 3rd in ST class in the Grand-Am Cup series, now called Koni Challenge for the '07 season.
This is the car for the team I helped out this last season, '03 BMW Z4 3.0L

This is the other team I helped out last year at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. The car was only set up for the street modified class. But due to an oversight in the rule book by the team owner we had to race in the unlimited class but we still finished 2nd over-all. If they would of left us in street modified we would of won our class by 65 laps and still gotten the 2nd over-all.

Thats me fueling the car. For those of you that like math here is something for you. I fueled the car at every pitstop but 2 during the 25 hour race, the car stopped every 1.5 hours and got 15 gallons of fuel each stop, each can holds 5 gallons so I had to lift 3 cans each stop. Fuel weighs about 6 pounds per gallon, how many pounds of fuel did I lift during the race? :D
Dylan8i 12-27-2006, 10:00 PM Good topic.
I myself am also in to cars. However i don't race or anything. I just don't have enough money right now. I'd like to SCCA my car, but its my only one, and i would need a few thousand in parts to even be competative ( '95 Honda del Sol s). But its fun to whip around corners on the road.
I also like to hike and backpack alot. due to the job i had this summer (USGS in canyonlands) i got to hike ~ 1000 miles (with my camera).
But now i'm in Grad school so i have no time or money to do anything else... so i guess thats my #1 hobby.
masdog 12-27-2006, 10:17 PM Wow...nice cars.
I've got a few hobbies. I'm not really a car guy - the vehicles I'm into are painted green! Hopefully I'll be able to afford one soon so I can start another project. :)
My main hobbies are writing (I've had one short story published in August, and one pending for March), reading, and computers.
another view 12-28-2006, 06:26 AM 1,080 lbs - what did I win? :D That was after only one cup of coffee, so I may be off a little. Let's say +/- 1,000 lbs...
I play bass in a rock & roll cover band. This picture was taken at a festival in September by a famous PR.com member...

WsW-WYATT-EARP 12-28-2006, 11:40 PM well 25 hour race with stops every 1.5 hours ... so 25 / 1.5 = 16.666666 and since you won't stop that .6666 there were 16 pit stops - 2 that you didn't do ... so we need to account for 14 pit stops 15 gallons each pitstop with 6lbs per gallon ... so 15 x 6 = 90 lbs each pitstop ... and 14 x 90 = 1260 lbs of fuel you lifted ...
I am not into cars ... not 1:1 at least ... I do race R/C cars 1:8 scale nitro 2.75hp and an electric 1:10 scale - I also golf ....
zrfraser 12-28-2006, 11:45 PM I play the drums, fish, and landscape
Z
Asylum Steve 12-29-2006, 05:01 AM I play the drums, fish, and landscape...
You play fish??? That I would pay money to see... :D
Greg McCary 12-29-2006, 05:22 AM I played golf up until recent back surgery, so I sold one of my guitars on e-bay so I could go digital. I may never play golf again, even if the Doctor says I can. I ain't going through another back surgery.
I still have my Ron Wood Artist edition Telecaster, it's one sweet guitar. I know, I know. Who's Ron Wood? I hear it all the time LOL
Greg
Asylum Steve 12-29-2006, 05:49 AM I know, I know. Who's Ron Wood? I hear it all the time...
Really? Didn't know that many were ignorant of rock music. Oh, well, guess if you're not in a boy band, a rapper, perform on American Idol, or get out of cars without any underwear on, it's tough to be known in mainstream America... :D
Wood's always been one of my favorites. And ya gotta love a guy that plays a Tele...
another view 12-29-2006, 11:38 AM well 25 hour race with stops every 1.5 hours ... so 25 / 1.5 = 16.666666 and since you won't stop that .6666 there were 16 pit stops - 2 that you didn't do ... so we need to account for 14 pit stops 15 gallons each pitstop with 6lbs per gallon ... so 15 x 6 = 90 lbs each pitstop ... and 14 x 90 = 1260 lbs of fuel you lifted
Oops - I wrote down 14 stops (took the two out of the total), then deducted two again... so 1260 is right.
Nothin' like a Tele! One of the guys in my band has a custom made tele from a local builder. I think it's the best sounding guitar I've ever heard, and there have been many... Of course in his hands almost anything would sound good!

My ESP Tele has a Hummbucker in the neck position giving it an AC/DC SG tone. And it was made for a bottle neck slide.

SmartWombat 12-29-2006, 02:06 PM during the 25 hour race, the car stopped every 1.5 hours and got 15 gallons of fuel each stop
Just curious, how long is the lap, and what were the car's average and max speeds?
Asylum Steve 12-29-2006, 03:29 PM Great pic... :cornut:
Hey Steve, we need to put together a pr.com band. I'm pretty decent on harp. Er, that's a harmonica, not that big ole' thing Harpo Marx plays... :D
Greg McCary 12-29-2006, 05:29 PM Who's gonna play the cowbell?????
Greg
walterick 12-29-2006, 05:56 PM Hey Steve, we need to put together a pr.com band.
OMG, Steve that is a great idea! I can play that instrument that you drag a stick along the ruts and it makes that funny "zzziiiipppppppp" sound! :D All we need is a songwriter and a lead singer. And of course everyone knows that bands with a female lead singer get the most attention...
so...
... Adina? :D
ZJChaser 12-29-2006, 06:09 PM lots stuff.....Used to race mountain bikes, just started riding again and might race again next summer.
I've been tracking cars for 7 years. Planning to do some testing in the near future with new race team campaigning MX5 miatas in Grandam Cup!
umm, I play bass, I quit my band in march though to focus on work. Sadly I'll be selling a lot of gear soon. Anyone interested in some 5 strings or a mesa powerhouse 4x10 :D
pics are:
racing in Big Bear.
on track @ willowsprings
backstage somewhere in Poland on a Euro tour early 06, yes I had a mohawk then and yes we had unlimited booze(my justification for that picture, hahaha) :D

I was going to say that we probably wouldn't find a drummer, photography is a bit complicated for them (joke if there are any here!) so you're hired. And Adina? Well, duh! :D
zrfraser 12-29-2006, 08:34 PM I'm a drummer
Z
Asylum Steve 12-29-2006, 08:48 PM Who's gonna play the cowbell?????
That's easy. Adina. She's from Wisconsin... :D
Greg McCary 12-29-2006, 08:54 PM I use to know Honky Tonk Women in Open G from start to finish, Do you think Adina could hit the intro. Z, you could pick it up to on the drums, LOL
Greg
walterick 12-29-2006, 09:01 PM I do own a djembe!

Its an exige but close enough :D They are ok for tall once you get it, that is just the tough part. Width is the biggest limiting factor for people to fit.
do we need multiple bassists in the PR band?
I have a few different hobbies, but one that does make a little money for me is soap and bath and body products.
I make real soap. Not melt & pour. I also formulate and make creams, lotions, hair products, lip balm, sea salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, lip gloss, bath bombs etcetcetc.....

jorgemonkey 12-30-2006, 06:25 PM I play guitar when I get the chance, and also I'm a huge mountain biker.
I'm also working on a Z Scale model railroad thats in the coffee table in the front room. Between my dad and me, we have Z, N, HO, O, and G scale railroads :)
schrackman 12-30-2006, 09:22 PM Whenever I get the free time I head out to the desert to find gold nuggets with a metal detector. This is a 1.3 gram nugget I found in the El Paso mountains, Ca for my wife on our first year anniversary. My largest nugget found was nearly a solid ounce in size.
Asylum Steve 12-31-2006, 08:52 AM suppose you want us in cheese hats too :mad2: :prrr: :ciappa:
Ok, ya got me. I confess to stereotyping Wisconsoneranians as nothing but "people of the cheese", and I do it to get a cheap laugh at your expense.
So, tell ya what. One of my main New Year's resolutions will be to STOP doing that...
Oh, FWIW, last year Adina sent me an authentic CHEESE HEAD HAT, and (seriously) it is one of my prized possessions. I have also been a Packer fan from the time I was a kid...:cornut:
adina 12-31-2006, 01:55 PM I go away for 4 days, and when I come back I get to be lead singer? Rock on! I will warn you though, I will be wearing underwear. (I read the year in review thing this weekend in the paper and lack of underclothes on females was a big one)

Not only is it authentic, it's from the Packer Pro Shop at Lambeau Field. Not some stupid shop at the mall!
adina 12-31-2006, 01:59 PM ps...I will be wearing my tiara when we have our first gig! :D

let me be the first to say then ..... GO BEARS !!!
I am not a bears fan ... but I dislike the packers much much more ... I was born and raised here in cow country ...
Remember Adina - you will be playing the cowbell too .... Terri Clark gets away with it though ... maybe it has to do with her jumping around alot

Jimmy B 12-31-2006, 04:54 PM I am also a mtn biker, it's my stress managment,a way to stay insome what good shape. My GF and I are also Nascar technical inspectors, waiting to see who is going to pick us up since our division was dropped after 06. Besides work, the racing stuff and riding I stay pretty busy.
Good thread.

walterick 12-31-2006, 06:35 PM I will warn you though, I will be wearing underwear.
What?! And disappoint our legions of fans?
Oh well, what they don't know can't hurt them.
QuadJunkies 12-31-2006, 10:10 PM When Im not taking pics, my Husband, kids and I ride and race Quads.

My other hobby seems to be TaxiDad, driving from one dance class to golf lessons to acting to jazz band practice, etc. I like taking pictures of things underwater and teaching SCUBA in the Keys and Biscayne National park.
adina 01-05-2007, 03:42 PM Currently, my hobby is standing outside waiting for a dog to pee. Then coming inside for 5 minutes, only to go back out and stand for a half hour again.
My life is very exciting. I did have a really good latte today, though.
BMWJNKY 01-06-2007, 01:55 PM Just curious, how long is the lap, and what were the car's average and max speeds?
Not sure what the max speed was, we didn't have a computer to watch the live onboard info. I want to say we were averaging laps in the 1min45sec range. At the end of the race where we didn't need to save the car we were turring sub 1min30sec times. This is where the race is held each year the first weekend of December. http://www.thunderhill.com/
