If #1 is a self portrait, then I think you did well. I like the composition and the candid look to it. The background is a bit bright but good work.
#2 is a good idea with the angle you just need a stronger subject.

Stick to colour. Quality in black and white demands considerable shades of grey from rich black to bright white with complete detail and no washout in the highlight area and no loss of detail in the black. It also requires considerable post processing. You have a great deal to learn.

I like the second shot. The self portrait is a little too flat. Not sure about the slight tolt of the second shot however.. seems it is tilting CCW a little? Can you straighten it? The shallow DOF produces a haunting effect.
