Hi

I currently own a 35mm Nikon F70 SLR, and was wondering if anyone knows whether or not my existing lenses (nikon af mount) would fit a digital Nikon body, or would buying a digital SLR entail having to buy all new lenses? This is my first post here, so would just like to say hello to everybody.

Thanks:)

It will certainly fit. The degree of compatibility depends on exactly what body you buy and exactly what type of lens you have:

Lens types:

AF = oldest, cannot used latest flash technology
AF-D = next generation, can use latest flash technology
AF-G = same as AF-D but no aperture ring
AF-S = latest generation, focussing motor is in body

Bodies

D200 = works with just about anything including non-autofocus lenses
D70/D50 = works with AF-D AF-G and AF-S and even AF
D40 = can only focus with AF-S

If I were you I would get a body with the kit lens. These are really good value and they are optimised for digital. Don't forget that the view you get with a given lens on a Nikon DSLR is not the same as on a film camera. The digital sensor is smaller so you multiply the focal length by 1.5 to get the equivalent view. A 28-105 becomes the equivalent of a 42-157mm

here is a great page I came across yesterday that explains all the nikon lenses and a chart that explains if they will mount and what will work on the camera with certain lenses
