It is in fact possible to shoot sports with an advanced P&S camera. I decided to try this with my Fuji S5200 to see what I could get. Although it took some post processing, (unsharp mask, etc.) mainly due to the noise levels of this camera at ISO 800, I got pretty fair results. Hopefully, this time the shots will attach unlike my last post. If not, they will be in my gallery at full size.

yes, you can shoot sports with a P&S, however the results are not good enough to use for printing for anything over 4x6 and have a good quality print. You can't print these in 8x10 and have a nice clean clear photo. 10 years from now that may be possible, who knows. But most P&S cameras don't have the best glass, slow AF and shutter lag that makes this kind of shooting much more difficult.
A P&S is a good start though, it allows you to learn the basics, plus how to anticipate the action and get timing down. Keep at it, learn all you can, both taking photos and post processing.

No doubt I would rather use my D50 with a 2.8. But this IS useable for a parent wanting shots of the kiddo. Granted, I had to shoot in manual focus for exactly the reason you point out. (slow AF) But this camera does allow full manual settings and is reasonably fast with a max 3.2 aperture.

don't take this into offense to anything you've done, but I don't find these shots usable. The sharpness/contrast and everything honestly hurts my eyes to look at it, and I don't find it very pleasing to look at it, and that is what makes an image in my opinion. Yes, a p&s can get usable shots, but the image quality will always be lacking because even those 10 mp p&s pixel quality comes nowhere close to a DSLR, just because all the pixels are packed into such a smaller sensor. The images are good action, just lacking in the image quality.

Here is another shot taken at the next game in the tournament. Same camera and flash, just changed the settings a bit:
Aperture f 3.2
Shutter 1/125
ISO 400
I will be using my D50 exclusively for the rest of the games but I wanted to see what I could get with this setup.
