For my SLR, I currently use a 300D (Rebel XT) and wait for Canon to get round to releasing an SLR with IS built-in (guess they never will though - doesn't seem to be on their scope)

I also use a Sigma 18-200mm lens for everyday use. I know it isn't great technically, but it was good for travel (single lens, light, although that goes against the principle of SLR!!!)

However, I had thought of getting the 17-85 because it has IS (and putting it on an XTi as a temporary replacement for the ageing 300D

I had been advised that this is reallynot a good lens - anyone used one / got thoughts on it please?

Reviews for the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS lens are definitely mixed. Here's a link to the user reviews on this site:

If you want something a lot better, and are willing to spend more, the Canon 17-55mm IS is a lot faster and has much better reviews. But it doesn't have as much reach:

Hi there John,
I have read the reviews and am happy to report that I have had none of the problems that other people speak of.I have of course taken a good number of shots that just weren't up to the mark but put that down to my own lack of ability as I am very new at this.
