ok, so i've been thinking about a card reader (with memory, not just to transfer from camera to computer) for a while. but i had a few questions.

What brand does everyone have/reccomends?

can any be used with out being plugged in? ie if i'm backpacking or something like that?

how big of a memory is reasonable?

They're all pretty much the same (the readers that is)

http://ledshoppe.com/cardreader.htm
Just be sure to get a USB 2.0 reader.

And there's always gonna be deals on memory cards. 1GB SD for ~$20 is easy to find nowadays.
There's a $2 SD card if you use Google checkout http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=202611657&adid=17662&adid=17662

I've ordered from both of these stores and both got me my stuff pretty quick, free shipping for both, but LEDshoppe does take about a week or a week and a half because they slow-boat it over from Hong Kong.

Depends on what resolution camera you've got, you can always buy additional cards.

They look cool.

I thought the same thing when I saw that on a dell laptop packaging, so I took a picture of it too for avatar use, but you beat me to it.

Fortunately I found a backup when I looked out an airplane window and saw my current avatar painted on the engine.

Dylan, I looked into the same thing (stand-alone HD with memory card slots) a while back to use while I travel abroad. I found one about the same as your B&H unit but I didn't get one due to:

1) You can upload your images while running the HD on its own L-ION batteries. There is a confirmation on the LCD that says the transfer is complete. But I wouldn't trust that when deleting all the images on my CF's.

2) I have a few old laptops and with the price of small external HD's (ones without the memory card slots), I figured I would just hand carry my hard drives - that way I wouldn't have to worry about laptops getting lost/bumped/broken in transit.

3) With the cost of memory cards getting so low, I figured what's the harm in buying several cards and waiting to process later. Microcenter is selling 1GB CF cards for $20 too.
