Hello Fisherman, and welcome to PR!
Not knowing camera prices over there, it's hard to say buy this one or that one. A couple of general rules though...
1 - If you're serious about your photography, go with one of the big name brands. That means Nikon or Canon.
2 - Go to a camera shop (or check out your photography buddies cameras) and physically hold the camera(s) you are considering in your hands. Ergonomics make a BIG difference in how well you will use the system. Find out which camera feels right in your hands and has controls that make sense to you.
Film camera's will be within your price range. Some of the entry level digitals may be, depending on how much the cameras cost over there. I'm thinking Nikon D50 and Canon Digital Rebel. The used market is also an option to get more camera for your money.
Hope this helps. Let us know what you get, and by all means, post some images for us to see.

The sony H series might be a good choice for you - I cannot say enough good things about them.
Erik.

Hello, fellow fisherman and welcome to these boards!
As an avid fisherman myself, I think you are looking for a small camera that you can slip into your vest pocket? DSLR's are probably out, yes?
For £350, you can get a lot of camera in terms of a good point-and-shoot. My wife uses a slim Sony that can slip in a shirt pocket (but I'm not allowed to use it for fishing :p ). Nikon and Casio also makes these slim profile digital cameras.
Good deals on 35mm film point-and-shoots can be found as well. Yashica makes one with a Zeiss lens. I used Contax T2 and TVS film point-and-shoots as well. BTW the small T2 had a fixed 35mm Zeiss lens from which I made 11" x 14" prints that looked the same as those coming from my film SLR lenses.
