What is wrong with the quoting on this board? Sometimes part of the quoted text disappears, sometimes the complete text.

I tried to search the forums for answers, but couldn't find any.

Thanks for your help :)

Sometimes part of the quoted text disappears? Hmm, I haven't come across this before. Is there a specific thread you can point me to where this occurred?

<--- Here's an example (that should have been a COMPLETE quote)

It was complete in my message box, but once I submit my reply it starts deleting text. Happens to me in most of my messages.

I haven't seen that happen. If anything, I think there's too much quoting. I wish people would delete the quote most of the time.

Do you know if you've been using the "Quick Reply" form? It doesn't include any quote. Could that be the problem? And what browser are you using?

I always use "Post Reply", also in the previous example.

See the point is, I always try to shorten my quotes, I don't like those large quotes either, but several times I had only one line, but I only see an empty quote after I submit my reply

To be honest, I can't use quoting at all, it's has become totally useless for me and I hope you understand ;)

Btw, I edited my last post when you replied, don't forget to read the last comments in my previous post John.

Thanks :)

It has to do with my Internet Explorer 6 or my graphics card. It turns out that the quotes are ok, but that I don't see parts of it.
Here is a screenshot of my previous post with an explanation of what happens.
I can reselect the same part of the quote several times, but each time it will show different letters that are missing.
This is not a problem of this site, so I have to find my answers somewhere else.

Thanks for the replies.

I too wish people would take the lead of PJ and myself and stop quoting full message text unnecessarily in their messages as well.

Reason it will start to overload the server and make the forums slower and slower and slower. Did I say Slower.

Really if you need to quote then just quote what you have to and leave the rest out.

I too haven't noticed the text disappearing problem, but there is an upgrade to the forum software they are planning on doing soon which might solve that problem if it is actually a real problem to everyone. As this is the first reporting of this particular problem, it might not be one. I have had one occassion where a post I made actually completely disappeared into cyberspace and had to redo it. And yes, I am sure it was posted as I checked it.

Thanks Peter, but like I said, it has to do with IE or my card, because it reminded me of other strange problems I had with IE after I noticed the weird behaviour as shown in my screenshot.

I totally agree, but overloading the server Peter... no, that hardly has any impact. :D
It's not a separate entry in a database, just a few extra bytes in a record in my opinion.

If you want to advice people how to keep the server fast, advice them to have a look at their jpeg options and image sizes. I've seen single images with sizes over 200Kb.
How many pages filled with quotes can you fill with 200Kb Peter?
I know the answer: a LOT! ;)

Wings, it looks like your browser could be causing the issue. The quote looks correct to me on my monitor, but I see that it is all mixed up on yours.

Regarding not using quotes, I think it's just fine as long as the person who is posting makes it clear who they are responding to. I've seen a few posts where I am not exactly clear as to which post/person they are answering.

I think that is quite common. I like it when there is a least a small quote from the post being replied to. Otherwise you have to scroll up and re-read the posts to see what the reply is referring to.

Another point: Sometimes I post a reply - and just don't think about deleting any of the original (quote) because it shows up automatically - and is below what I'm typing.

These aren't complaints........just comments. Hi Lara! ;)

I think the confusion largely comes from people reading in Linear or Hybrid mode, both of which display the posts in time order. I usually read the threads in Threaded mode, just hitting next takes you through each sub-thread indiviually in order . If a thread is photo-heavy (ie NYC Gathering) and I want to view all of them at once I switch to Hybrid mode.

Another point: Sometimes I post a reply - and just don't think about deleting any of the original (quote) because it shows up automatically - and is below what I'm typing. This doesn't happen with the Quick Reply. I'm another firm believer in the beauty of the Quick Reply. :D
