I think my neighbor has a uranium deposit decaying under her garden of something.
This sunflower was over 14 feet tall and was past the height of their eaves trough before the flower opened. It can barely hold it's own weight now. Now for perspective.. the Hibiscus in the forground has 7 inch flowers on it and the sunflower is about 3 feet behind it. Look at the size of the leaves! The sunflower to the left side is over 8 feet tall and is about 3 feet closer to me as I shot as well and it also is dwarfed even with the perspective of it being in the foreground

Jaedon - that thing is HUGE! How about a close-up (as close as you can get to a 14' tall flower)?

I fully agree with the close up comment. There's got to be some great texture going on there.

Alrighty then .. I'll get out there tomorrow. The head is getting so big that it is hanging lower each day. I was sitting there waiting for bee's to land on it but no takers so far. I have one shot of the head that I took yesterday... see below

Not the greatest shot and there's some obvious focusing issues.. but I'll go out and play some more tomorrow when there's light. Ihate that work gets in the way of a good day of shooting =P

:yesnod: I hear you - work is always getting in the way of something!

That is just a large variety that was properly fertilized :D I wish I took a picture of the sunflowers at our shop last year, because they were atleast 15 feet. The doors are 15 feet to allow the trucks to get inside and the flowers were that height and higher.

Got a macro? It'd make a nice abstract.

no macro lens but I got a few close ups today. The flower is now so heavy that I can reach it with my hands standing beside it. (approx 8 feet off the ground) I took some extreme closeups with my 40 - 150 of the face and a few others to complete my first "series".

Now just save some of those seeds for winter and you'll have photo opportunities lining up for you!
I harvest sunflowers every year, and this one you've got is about average, though they are impressive, and have seeds for all my feathery friends and few fuzzy rodents.
Just think of the bird shots you have coming! Set up a chair and a tripod (or mono) and camp out!
