View Full Version : Kit Lens Photo
Old Timer 06-30-2006, 05:55 AM We have been posting a lot of images lately with setups that might discourage the casual photographer or beginnner. I was out yesterday at a friends house with only the kit lens on my camera (just taking some family pics of the grandson), and happened to see a flower I thought was interesting. I guess the point of this post is to say don't think that you have to have dedicated f2.8 lenses or fancy tubes or whatever. If you see something you like move in and get a picture. The important thing is get your focus and exposure right. This was taken on 4mp camera with the 18-70mm f 3.5-4. kit lens. Here is the result.
paulnj 06-30-2006, 06:44 AM Now this is a great subject! While fancy gear is nice and helps, we don't actually need it to make a nice image! This is a great example and I will add mine too
This was taken with a $100 fuji A340 digital P&S a few days ago. I resized, slight levels, sharpened and added a border.

Another great example. I'm afraid that we might sometimes scare off would be photographers that think they have to have some exotic camera or lens to get great images. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Just check the gallery sometimes and some of the really great pictures posted there with P&S cameras. The only difference between theirs and yours is they have taken the time and effort to get to know their equipment and use it to the fullest. Thanks for joining in Paul.
paulnj 06-30-2006, 07:52 AM Well I was in manual mode at -.3 EV :D That camera is very simple, but can take images that are quite nice.
SHHHH, don't tell my client, but I sold them images from that camera and they were just as happy with them as from my DSLR
kkraczek 06-30-2006, 08:57 AM This is a great topic, OT. I know that I would have been intimidated if this was the first place I came upon as a beginner! I love your example- crisp, well exposed, and beautiful. :)
Here's my fav from our trip to Hawaii 4 years ago. I think that this was with my Kodak 2MP P&S camera. (I did add saturation in Photoshop, but that's all- no fancy stuff here!)

Another very nice example. Both my daughters have P&S cameras and I have tried to convince them to get out of auto and learn what their camera's will do. Many times I think that the P&S shooters are afraid that they will mess something up if they move a setting. I hope we can convince them that only by moving the settings will they start to get the kind of results that had hoped for when they saw the examples of what those cameras could do and decided to buy them.
The same goes for those with the comsumer grade DSLR's and kit lenses. They can get amazing results if they will just learn the capabilities of their equipment and take it of auto. Belive it or not you are smarter than that little chip in the camera.
payn817 06-30-2006, 02:20 PM Great examples all. If I had come here first too, I would have thrown my camera in the trash. However, the regulars here are all great people, very informative, and makes everyone feel welcome. This forum has moved my photographic abilities along much faster, and has made me feel as though I am capable. These examples are no exception, now I gotta dig the kit lens out and blow the dust off. :D

Alison 07-01-2006, 04:51 PM Not the prettiest of Roses but what attracted me to it was that the sun has bleached it creating different shades of pink.
Canon EOS 350D, Kit lens 18-55mm, Manual Mode, ISO 400, f/5.6, SS1/250, cropped
Thanks everyone - for giving those of us who own 'basic' equipment some hope!
