View Full Version : June Photo Project: Plantlife
Hey guys I was really happy with the turn out for last months Photo Project, especially from Allison!
This month we are going to switch gears and take advantage of the new season. This months Topic is:
Plantlife
So lets get out and see what Mother Nature has to offer us for our photographic growth!
I will get things started with this lil' guy.
Common Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis, N.E. Florida.
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a183/almoagain/D60/Plants/CRW_6774.jpg
And I shall continue with:
Orange Milkwort, Polygala lutea, N.E. Florida.

payn817 06-03-2006, 05:36 PM And a couple oldies, just for fun.
payn817 06-03-2006, 05:49 PM BTW, that buttonbush stuff is great! Love how you composed it, with the smooth BG and framed it with the leaves.
Love the new avatar, Almo! BENDER RAWKS!!
Thanks Payne, and I would have to agree..:D
You are showing me up something good buddy. Your shots are awesome.

julsoph 06-03-2006, 07:16 PM This is one of my current favorite subjects too...:)
Here are a few from this week:
Emily
payn817 06-03-2006, 07:36 PM Thanks mdmc! This ain't no competition (I'm from Georgia :D ). I find it interesting to see how different people view similar subjects, and find inspiration in these different views. That's why this is becoming my favorite forum.
Emily, I have never seen closeup work from you, nice detail you captured there.

Mark.
photophorous 06-03-2006, 09:03 PM Also, one of my favorite subjects. Good choice, Almo.
Here are a couple I took recently on 35mm Tri-X, scanned by my Canoscan 8400.
Fronds at the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and
flowering Red Tip Photinia in my back yard.
I'll get back later with some new digital stuff. :)
Alison 06-03-2006, 10:00 PM Wow! These are fantastic!
I'm not too good at plant life.
Does this one count?

Sure it does darlin'! It's up to you to interpret the meaning of the subject for yourself.
Personaly I really like that image. Great contrast between the B&W and the color.

Old Timer 06-04-2006, 03:12 PM Hey Larry, That last thingy is pretty neat, what is it?

That last one is kind of neat isn't it. It the center pod of a poppy after all the petals have fallen off. I shoot all jpeg. Number 1 and #4 are out of my Fuji S602Z and only 3.1 mp. I was real happy with them I shot them for Ricks 24 hour thread over on viewfinder. I hadn't used the Fuji for about 2 years and just pulled it out to carry with me for that thread.
Loupey 06-05-2006, 08:35 AM Wow, these are all great! Such colors, angles, vantage points, and some stuff I've never seen before. Great detail and sharpness too.
Hey, Payn, I don't recall seeing some of these image recently. They must be new? Love the non-traditional close-ups!
I don't have anything new to add. Gotta go out and come up with some new images :p
mwfanelli 06-05-2006, 09:59 AM This was taken with an old AgfaScan flatbed scanner! Yep, just positioned the plant on the scanner bed. Looks pretty good considering. Still counts as a "photograph", right?
mwfanelli 06-05-2006, 10:09 AM One more. Taken in Wyoming many years ago. Rather than fight with the wind, I tried to work with it. This was taken with an old format that you younger folks probably don't remember: "film." It was pieces of plastic smeared with chemicals. Back in the old days, that was the only choice. :-) Oh come on, just joking!!!
Here are a few oldies but goodies I had around. The one including the flag was shot in Maine. The leaves from out of a 3rd floor window (trying out a new lens). The tree was shot in Stockbridge (Berkshires). The flower was shot at home in the rain.

Liz, I love the yellow leaves. That is simple a lovely image.

Thanks Almo, for the comments. I always liked that picture. It is a simple image. I shot it when most of the leaves were gone from the trees.

payn817 06-05-2006, 06:02 PM Loupey, I don't post alot of photos anymore, due to the camera club, and the local network resulting, just share mostly with those folks. I'm starting to get a little picky about what I show, and that is slowing it down too. Not to mention the difference in a print and a monitor.
Anyway, most of them were within the past couple of weeks, and a few about a year old (some of my first). The close-ups are the most recent.

I got really picky about what i would show about a year ago. I post very little of what I actually shoot. In fact I have posted more in the last 2 weeks than I have for almost 6 months.
julsoph 06-05-2006, 06:15 PM Here are a couple from today...

I love the juxtaposition of the Plant and the plants, and the word play is great!
I agree with John (Almo) - I love the live plants with the Plant in the background. The lighting is great.....perfect time of day.
Excellent work - creative. Good eye!
Liz
A native plant....:D
photophorous 06-09-2006, 12:42 PM John / Liz,
Thanks for the nice comments. I'm glad you like it. I had a little trouble getting everything sharp because the flowers where being blown around, but what are you gonna do?

A good shot though, despite the awful pun.
You pushed the plantlife title to the limit.
I heard that these don't open w/out ants. Here's proof!
WillCAD 06-10-2006, 06:09 AM I have only recently tried my hand at such shots. The results are not terribly good, but here are a few of them anyway:

Nice one. Yeah, being around them all my life and having owned one, that was the first thing I thought of when I read Almo's project for the month. You beat me to it!
Anyway, I figured most people would post "pretty" images so, to be always different, I thought I'd go shoot some "ugly" ones. Here are some.
edit: A "manufacturing plant" that is.
payn817 06-11-2006, 01:28 PM You didn't think I was done, did you? Some great stuff in this thread.

Oh the luxury of still having Grand Parents around, or even to have parents... Sigh.. Treasure them, they don't last forever.

I really like the reverse perspective shot, looking up from beneath the rose. It's an unusual perspective that not many would think to shoot, but it turned into a photo that showcases the beauty of the flower from whole 'nother direction.
Alison 06-12-2006, 02:25 PM A few more from me :)

Thank you so much Payn.
It's Pea Season right now in the UK and my hubby eats them, raw, by the lorry load lol.
I had a "Eurika Moment" this afternoon.
I was standing in my kitchen and shouted out loud "PEAS! Peas are plant life!" Ran upstairs grabbed my camera and a sheet of white A4 paper and used my settings for a natural lighting shot.
I was pretty happy with my results from today.
And all taken with my little beauty of a lens...my 50mm 1.8 mkII
I love that lens!!!

Hey Loupey, I like your "ugly" plants. Don't think they're ugly at all. I like the second and last the best. Nice shapes in all of them. I bet they would work well in B&W.
Sorry I beat you to the plant idea. I was in a hurry, because I thought someone else might think of it. :D

Loupey 06-14-2006, 09:44 PM No problem, Paul. Your "plantlife" shots are better than what I was going to post anyway (mostly just people working at machines :) )

Thanks Alison. I was pleased with this as well. I used the Nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro with a 36mm ext tube and added a little light with the SB800. Everything was set to manuel and I was hand holding. A real balanceing act, but it allowed me to shoot at 1/200 at f22. Thanks for commenting.

dbutler 06-28-2006, 05:31 PM Here are mine! These are Evening Primrose. They've been the bane of my existence for the past two years. I guess I didn't think that, when they were described as invasive, that that meant they are INVASIVE!! But ain't they pretty?
