Do animal portraits count? No, not my dog either...lol
I don't have a problem with that, as long as it is a ture portrait. After all, this is not a wildlife project.
Alison 05-05-2006, 12:57 PM Now I am in my element! :D
Titles:
#1 "Flowers for you"
#2 "A genuine smile"
#3 "Weeping Willow"
#4 "Dalmation"
payn817 05-05-2006, 01:15 PM How would one define portrait? I mean like for example, would the second photo be a portrait?
Alison 05-05-2006, 01:26 PM I just googled definition of a portrait here's what one link read...
A portrait is a painting, photograph, or other artistic representation of a person. Portraits are often simple head shots or mug shots and are not usually overly elaborate or creative. The intent is to show the basic appearance of the person, and occasionally some artistic insight into his or her personality.
However, I have seen some beautfiul pet portraits.
I'm in photography heaven!!! *sighs*
However, I have seen some beautfiul pet portraits.
I'm in photography heaven!!! *sighs*
I am ok with pet portraits. I just don't want a bunch of wildlife stuff.
Here is a example of what would be acceptable:

Don't ask me why the cat decided to 'help' with dinner !
Please be assured that NO animal was hurt in the taking of this image - it was ALL his idea ! - there was NO oil in the frying pan and the cooker ring was NOT tuned on !
It did put a stop to cooking tea though - while I set the camera up :)

Alison 05-14-2006, 02:03 PM Took this shot of my baby girl Trinity, today, while my 17 year old daughter Gina, was playing with her.
Just at the point she looked at me I pressed the shutter. Talk about great timing.
The image of Trinity in her cot was one of my first attempts with my new lens and bouncing a flash, Title: "Caged"
It's her birthday today...Happy 1st Birthday Trinity!!! :D

Alison-
Thank you for posting such beautiful portraits of children. The lighting is always perfect and you've mastered the art of cropping and zooming into your subject to create a mood of innocence.
(Aren't you lucky to have a house full of natural, beautiful models waiting for you to release the shutter.)

masdog 05-14-2006, 08:52 PM I just posted this one on viewfinder. It was my first real portraits, and I took it on Saturday afternoon after a commencement ceremony at my alma mater.

Alison,
Some photographers spend thousands of dollars on studio lighting equipment with expensive light altering gadgets and don't even come close to achieving the quality of portrait you produce with window light and... a ceiling light bulb. That's amazing. Go girl!
Alison 05-22-2006, 10:37 PM WillCAD - lol. That's funny. But they do look slightly different. I would still love to get a twin shot.
freedom - wow! thank you so much. What a lovely compliment.
I have studio lights, but it's such a pain getting them out and putting them away all the time. Plus having Tungsten's with 2 babies running around isn't really safe.
I had my 430EX ready and waiting just in case I needed to use it, fortunately I didn't need to ;)
I prefer natural lighting to be honest.
I also have a backdrop stand but I clamped my black bg to a set of bunk beds for these shots lol.
You just have to make the best of what you have. I just show that it is possible to work with the minimum as long as you know what your doing ;)
That's another reason why I post my info. I feel it might help people learn that they don't need all the fancy shmancy equipment that they think they might need. (Like I did when I started shooting portraits).

Ronnoco 05-29-2006, 05:27 AM Your kids certainly have your colouring, Allison!:) Did you train them to become so natural and photogenic in front of the camera or did they get that naturally from you as well? :)
Ronnoco
Alison 05-29-2006, 06:04 AM LOL I hate being that side of the camera! I just chain them down and tell them to pose lol.
No not really. I just think they are comfortable with it because having a camera in front of them is an everyday thing. They even roll their eyes when I go running to grab my camera to capture something.
I have also tried to drum self confidence into them (something I don't have). Telling them they are beautiful and have personalities to match. :)
Some more portraits for a photoshoot I did this weekend. My friend Connie and her friend Cat are fans of the Anime "Utena" and were dressed up as two characters (Connie is Anthy (red dress) Cat is Utena (pink hair). All shot at the Guild Inn, Scarborough

I'm pretty darn clueless about portrait photography, but I just started messing around with it. My favorite subject is my daughter.
In this pic she was really sick. We went outside for fresh air and I snuck a few shots of her. I hadn't seen her smile in days. It was nice to see her sweet smile again.

Alison 05-31-2006, 04:34 PM Just in time to get a couple of last minute portraits in :)
I took some pictures today of my twins sisters with my twin daughters. (Yay! A twin shot!)
My twin sisters were being typically themselves when they get together lol.
Diana even had to get up and go get some tissue because she was crying with laughter!
Also a couple of my Nieces.
ken1953 05-31-2006, 09:11 PM It's technically June 1st at 12:01 Central time, but I've been working my tail off trying to get something for this project. I apologize that I haven't done anything sooner, but I didn't get anything this month that I felt was good enough to be called a "Portrait", until today! I hope you like these. Other than cropping, these are straight out of the camera and resized for the web.
One of these, not sure which one yet, will be submitted as one of my NYIP photo projects.
