Hello all this is my first post here. My daughter is a 3 sport (Cross Country, Swimming, Track) high school athlete so I love taking action shots. I have a Nikon D50 and a couple of inexpensive lenses.
Here she is last night high jumping.

Hi Gary, welcome to the forum.

Good start there, although I'd crop the kid out of the right side.

Nice action shot. I agree with JS get the kid out of the shot. The landing mat makes it difficult but try for a little lower angle and you will get the effect of more hieght in the jump and get rid of some of your distraction background. High jump is a great event to photograph you know right where the action will be and can be pre focused and ready for each shot. My son and daughter were both track and cross country runners. I was never in better shape than when I was following them and trying to get pictures at CC meets. Have fun with it now they graduate way to quickly.

yeah, high jump is very hard, and you basically have to rely on good form from the athletes in order to get good photos. Sometimes, people will bend their head back, making for a great shot, and sometimes they will keep their head forwards which makes for a great shot of a head of hair. But good job, just crop tighter and PP it a bit.
