View Full Version : 30D In My Hot Little Hand
PhotoMommy 03-24-2006, 02:34 PM Hey all,
Just wanted to share that I got my 30D yesterday from Henry's in Canada. I plan to seriously try it out this weekend and will let everyone know what I think of it (if anyone's interested).
Cheers,
Jody
Photo-John 03-24-2006, 03:12 PM You've got one interested bike photographer here!
I already told Canon I think I want one. They said I might be able to get one in April. I want it in time for Sea Otter, or I might just wait until Photokina to see what they come up with. Plus, I am committed to selling my motorcyle if I'm going to buy a new camera.
Congratulations! Wow! Great choice!
PLEEEEESSSSSE come back and post those pictures soon!

Ronnoco 03-24-2006, 03:34 PM If I may make a suggestion having bought from Henry's two days ago. Check out the price from Downtown Camera in Toronto. They have a web site and their price is often lower than Henry's. I mention the lower price to Henry's and get a discount to the lowest price. Vistek.ca in the same area is also worth checking out for prices. Again mention the lowest price you can find in the area to Henry's and get the discount.

A motorcycle? I thought you were a mountain biker? You're not getting soft on us are you? :p
I would be interested as well. I have one request. Take one shot at ISO 1600 and post a 100% crop for us. I want to compare it's noise with the 20D and see if it is any different in this respect. Do you know if the 30D has the same chip as the 20D? I've heard that it is and it isn't. And hopefully the shutter noise is better on the 30D.
Congratulations on you new camera.

I'm 99% sure that the sensor is the same as the 20D.
My life used to revolve around motorcycles. My motorcycle is a roadrace machine. It's a vicious little toy. But I don't ride it anymore. Mountain bikes took over. Gotta cut my losses and get some money back out of it.
mjs1973 03-24-2006, 04:10 PM Jody,
Congrats on the new purchase. I would be very interested to hear about the 30D.
I just read today, in Popular Photography that the sensor is the same as the 20D.
mjs1973 03-24-2006, 04:12 PM Hey PJ,
That sounds like a cool bike, got any pics?
ekstasis16 03-24-2006, 07:10 PM I'm also curious about the shutter noise. That's the only thing the DRebel has over the 20D. If they make it quieter, I'll actually be able to shoot golf and tennis without hiding in the bushes. I'll likely be picking up a 30D in June so I'm anxious to see the first user reviews.

Hiding in the woods shooting tennis? Heck, I am right on the court with the players and a 1D and 1D MKII N and no one ever said the cameras were too loud for tennis.

ekstasis16 03-24-2006, 07:49 PM We, uh, have some pretentious coaches who demand silence and don't want photogs running around, and I don't care to deal with them. Not that a softer shutter sound would solve that problem I guess...oh well. Sports aside, I've learned that people find the 20D's shutter annoying during weddings and other quiet ceremonies.

Hi guys,
Here's a couple shots from today and yesterday. I think I have some AF issues (look at the two action shots). The stills are okay, but it seems if there is ANY movement whatsoever (like if I breathe, for example), the camera is not forgiving at all. I've also noticed some funkiness with the white balance. The color just seems "off" and I can't seem to get it dialed in like with my 20D. The photos just don't pop for me. It could be that the last two days have been kind of grey, but I think I could have gotten more out of the 20D (if it weren't in the shop). I'm going to play with it some more and might call Canon on Monday - it may be that it needs a slight calibration - or it may be a lemon, who knows. I'll keep you posted.

PhotoMommy 03-25-2006, 08:26 PM Okay, here's the same four photos before I Photoshopped them - tell me what you think...

ejlatstl 04-06-2006, 08:42 AM Jody,
Any feedback on the shutter noise question? Thanks a bunch!

Peter_AUS 04-06-2006, 02:43 PM PhotoMommy, all you need to do is learn the camera and some post processing. The flower is under exposed a little, needs some unsharpen masking as well.
The same with the boy on the bike, first one with hands off handle bars is metering with the sky and over exposing, needs some contrast adjustment and unsharpen masking as well.
The Dog you focused on his nose, slightly underexposed and again unsharpen masking.
The other bike one is only slightly over exposed and again unsharpen masking.
BLS439 04-09-2006, 07:48 PM I happened to also pick up the new Canon 30D. I must say, this piece of equipment is nice and seems comparable to my EOS 3. I really like the fact that my lenses are transferrable between the two bodies.
Anyway, I experienced some auto-focus problems also. This camera, 30D, will not AF my Canon 28-80 zoom that came with my EOS 3. It will AF my other lenses, including third party, perfectly well. For comparison, my EOS 3 will AF with the 28-80 lense perfectly fine.
I also got an "ERR 99" message one time while trying to quickly focus from one racer to the next in a sports shot.
I think I need to step it up and get some great glass now!
