When I took this I didn't think much of it, other than that I wished it were more (took it about a year ago), but now it really strikes me. I made it one of my slide show screen saver images and I like it more each time I see it.
What do you guys (and gals) think?
Thanks.

Personally speaking, I think the rock formation takes up too much of the scene. There's nothing there to make it stand out, and there's not enough of the horizon. In addition I think maybe this would have been more compelling if there had been something in the foreground to break it up as well. JMHO

BM, I like this alot. You have three elements here, all complimenting eachother. The lighting on the rock, and the detail and contrast, texture, tones are all very powerful in making the rock itself a very interesting and pleasing subject to look at. Then, there is the soft tone sky with whisps of cloudes adding tonal contrast and enhancing the strong edge lines of the rock. Finally, the horizon, with mountains peaks in the distance provides just enough idea to give the point of view of being way up on this rock formation. All three elements are sliced in size accordingly to their importance and impact on the scene. i think this is very well done. The lighting, exposure, sharpness, dof, framing , composition all done just right to bring a simple yet powerful image.

I agree with Gary, this is a wonderful shot, though I might have included just a tad more horizon. The texture is very strong, which is a huge plus. In addition, the wispy blue sky/cloud combination is perfect for this shot. Other than the composition, I love this shot.
Well done,
Jared

BM,
Gary summed it all up better than me so all I will say is that I love the textures you captured.

John- That is just about how I felt when I took the picture. Many simple things about it bothered me.
Gary- Thanks for your gracious comments. I'm an admirer of your work, so coming from you it means a lot (myself being an amatuer).
To everyone else, thanks for commenting.
Just goes to show that you shouldn't delete a picture that you don't like today. You never know, a year later it might be one of your favorites. :)

BM,
Apple Valley? Just above Yucaipa? If so, I'm right around the corner from ya in Banning!
BTW, I like the rock. I agree, however, there should be more of the background the scene.

not to many color images strike me as good...but I like this image a lot.
The timing (light wise) is perfect...the rock as great texture because of that light quality.
Everything seems to have a nice balance to it...very simple composition but it is very striking image.
you may want to get some more contrast in the sky, but this may ruin the soft quality that is going on in the background.
simple = effective
great job. cheers.
