Hi there, just another newbie I guess.

I outta buy a new camera, upgrade my options (had only a coolpix 4500).

Regardless of the price, which of the following combinations would you suggest the most:
1. Nikon D50 + Lens 18-200mm + external Speedlight.
2. Nikon D70s + Lens 18-70mm + external Speedlight.
3. Nikon D200 (body only).

For the first two, which speedlight would you recommend (at around 450$)?

If you can suggest a better combination for around 1400-1600$ it can also be great.

Well, thanks to you all, you've a wonderful wonderful forum here!

go with option 2, and when you can afford it get a longer lens for it

The sb800 is an excelent flash, and is an incredible combo with the D70. If you are using a coolpix 4500 at the moment, you will be very impressed with the performance of a D70s and SB800

Oh.. you will need some more memory cards, because I promis you you will fill them so fast

Hello and welcome to the forum!

First off, I'm curious if you have any Nikon lenses, because of option three.

If you do, or if you can acquire the funds for lenses in the near future, then everything I've heard and read says go with option # 3. I was going to get a D70s for Christmas, but I've been convinced by those that have used both to go with the D200. So that's my Christmas present this year. (Only nine more months to go!)

Given the range of funds you listed, I would opt for option # 2. The D70s with the 18-70mm lens and the SB-800 should make a great combo. I think you would be very pleased with it. The 18-70mm lens will give you the equivalent focal length of 27-105mm and that should cove most of what you will want to do. You can always add longer and shorter lenses over time.

The SB-800 is THE Nikon speedlight to get. I've been wanting one since it came out. You will not be disappointed with it. And at $325 from B&H Photo, it's less than the $450 you listed.

There's my two cents worth.

And again, welcome aboard!!!

Oh, goodie! thank you all...

Since everybody is suggesting option#2 (not only here) then it settles, I will get the D70s with the 18-70 Lens and SB800 Speedlight, very shortely. Together with a 3 GB CF, 2 more batteries, and a fine tripod, it will come out at around 1600$, which is a great price for my country.

Well, thanks you all very much. I wish I could afford the D200 + Lens, but it is really too much. only for the body I had to really squeeze it in....

thanks you, and if anyone has more suggestions it can be great, I will only order it next thuesday.
