View Full Version : What about the "new" 30mm Sigma prime???

Hello guys, I have been asking about 50mm Nikkor primes not so long ago (to be used on a D70 and hopefully on a D200 later this year...). Since then, I have been looking at others Nikkor primes such the 28mm f/2.8.

That being said, I am somewhat bothered by the fact that all these primes were designed for film SLR's and none of them feature the special coating now found on newer digital specific lense. I fear that chromatic aberation from light bouncing off the sensor to the rear element may be an issue.

Then, I remembered that Sigma released the 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM prime few months ago which is digital specific (it even haves a sonic wave (so to speak) motor). Now, I haven't heard much about that one and I wasn't considering going third party. I am not looking for saving money by buying non Nikkor lenses but I look at the three reviews this lense got here and everybody gave it 5/5. They are all raving about the optics.

So, does anybody here tested the Nikon mount version of this Sigma???

regards

Hi Seb,

Sorry, but I can't help you with your question about the prime lenses. I can tell you that I have a Sigma zoom (70-300) that I have been quite happy with. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Sigma again.

Cheers,
Tim

ps. I think my next lens will be a wide-angle zoom with low distortion for interior/architecture type shots.

Thanks Tim!

On a side note, I recently learned that there was a compatibility issue betwen the D200 and any Sigma lense with the HSM motor, how fun.... lol

Ya. I think I saw that too. Did Sigma fix it and announce that they would replace any affected lens?

At that point it doesn't seems to be the case. I first saw an announcement on dpreview posted on december 22. After giving a look at Sigma's website I saw a series of 3 announcement concering flashes that wouldn't work properly on the D2X the D2H and the D200, lenses which would leads to underexposure on the D200 and then the HSM thing on the... D200.
They (Sigma) state that they will come up with an "upgrade" program but there are no further details right now.

Moreover it seems that there are significant changes in the way the D200 electronic's works comparatively to previous Nikon dslr's and that using third party gears with this camera is a pretty bad idea. I guess I'll rather have a 50mm nikkor prime as I first thought. I have heard good things about the performance of these on the D200 anyway...
