I recently bought a Canon G6 mostly to use while riding mountain bikes.

I want to mount the case on chest area by strapping it to the shoulder straps of my hydration pack like this.

Since I live and ride in a temperate rain forest water resistance is important.

We also ride in dry dusty areas like the Interior of BC, and SouthWestern USA.

I asked a similar question on MTBR (http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=161707) and received a couple of brands to check out.

Sundog & Ortlieb.

Sundog hasn't made the River Runner series in a long time, but they will be restarting production this summer.

Ortlieb makes the Protect (http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/images/pdf/protect.pdf) case and it looks like it will fit except of the depth, the case is 7cm but according to the photo below, the camera is 73mm thick.

Does anyone have experience with the Ortlieb Protect?

Are there any other water & dust proof cases I should be looking at?

Any mail order places that sell Ortlieb that you would recommend? (The Canadian distributor is out of stock.)

Thanks for your help!

Craig-
Good to see you here. Hope the G6 is treating you well. I don't know enough about either of those companies to say anything. But, I used a G2 for a long time. I carried it in a Tamrac fanny pack. Technically, it wasn't waterproof or dustproof. But it worked very well. I took it on plenty of wet, winter rides and got the case covered with mud. The camera nevr suffered. On top of that, I really believe that these cameras are more rugged than people give them credit for. I've had all kinds of cameras out in all kinds of crappy weather. I haven't actually had one fail yet.

I don't think they make the bag I have anymore. And it won't work on your chest, anyway. But I honestly think any good Lowepro or Tamrac case will work just fine. Maybe not if you take it out for a three hour ride when it's dumping. But for everything else, I wouldn't worry about it. I'd worry more about crashing with that brick attached to your chest - ouch

One option you have is a ewa bag type housing. this is the link to B&H for the product.

Many canon and olympus cameras have housings avalable reasonablly priced but I don't think the G6 is one of them.

I haven't used the G6 much yet as I don't have any way to carry or protect it.

I'll check out the Tamrac site to see if they have anything as I know they make waterproof camera back packs, maybe they make something smaller?

When I first bought my Yashica T4 Super I killed one riding, but I think that was due to vibration.

There are reviews on both the Sundog River Runner & Ortlieb camera cases online, just finding them is the problem.

I've seen various versions of that style of bag, but that is probably more water protection than I need, and it doesn't have any impact resistance.

These are two of the camera bags I was looking at. Any others I should be checking out?

Ordered the Ortlieb "Protect" camera bag & "Camera Bag Harness System" direct from Ortlieb USA on Friday (Canadian distributor is out of stock). I'll post a follow review once I get it.

Update:

I ordered the Ortlieb "Protect" camera bag & "Camera Bag Harness System" direct from Ortlieb USA (Canadian distributor was out of stock at the time).

I've probably done about 20 rides with the camera bag and harness now and I'm very happy with it. I don't even notice that it is there while riding. I've also had one good endo onto the bag (sunk the front tire into a sand pit) with no damage to the camera even though I landed on it.

I still need to play around with the extra padding (blue camp pad foam) I added to the inside to reduce volume to make putting the camera back in the bag a little easier.

Don't know if this fits in with what you want, but:

I have taken a gallon sized zip-loc baggie, and put my camera in it for use in wet weather. a hole is cut for the lens and a rubber band is used ti secure the opening around the lens. (be sure to only secure it to a non-rotating part of the lens.)

Open the zip-loc part of the bag to look through the viewfinder. seal it up when done.

You have full access to all camera controls, and the camera is fairly protected.

Plus, the baggies are cheap, readily available - and they work.
