View Full Version : Basketball is a whole 'nother animal...
hesaias 01-09-2006, 04:09 PM First off, my lenses suck. Oh yeah, and I am using my Digital Rebels built in flash. Basketball is WAY different to shoot that football, but I am getting there. Our gym is lit pretty well, but tha first shot is on a night where I went ISO800 w/flash. I was happier with those images overall. I need a Flash, and a nice f/2.8 zoom, say around 50-135mm to smooth out the pics and get the focus nice and sharp.
Any other tips you guys can give? I move around the gym alot, trying to get shots from as many angles as I can.

JSPhoto 01-09-2006, 04:15 PM Nice to see you back Scott! One problem is I can't see the photos, for some reason they are not loading!
Ummm, yup, roundball is different to shoot :) but you can do it, just need to get faster lenses. Basically you can use anything 3.5 and down in well lit gyms. Flash really should be a last resort, but if lenses are out of reach $$ wise then get yourself a used flash. Even the Sunpack 433D flash will work in manual mode... I bought one for a whopping $55.

hesaias 01-09-2006, 04:26 PM Ok, it took a sec, but I got them up now. Sorry about that.
Im thinkin Flash before lens because of how grainy the shots are at iso 1600. Will a better lens help with this also?
livin4lax09 01-09-2006, 04:38 PM if you exposure correctly with ISO 1600, you can get some nice images. Using a kit lens, 70-300 f/4-5.6, i got a few good images in a very dark gym., Noise ninja or neatimage can always clear up noise for you.

Those aren't too bad Scott. The only one I have an issue with is the one with no ball in it. :) Otherwise, good action, you do OK there.

hesaias 01-09-2006, 04:58 PM Im using Noise Ninja. The one w/o a ball is a foul shot, and I do not take the shooter on foul shots as a personal rule. I like the expressions on the others guys faces as they get ready to go for the rebound ;)

Yeah, I'm just a stickler for 99% of action shots having the ball, puck, whatever in the shot too. That was pounded into my head by certain people who I learned the ropes from.

masdog 01-09-2006, 09:03 PM Gettings good round-ball shots depends greatly on the lighting. If you have a poorly-lit gym, your results aren't going to be that great, even with a flash, ISO 3200, and a fast lens. I don't think there is much you can do about it besides keep chugging away. I wouldn't necessarily keep any of the shots for a portfolio.
If you have to, you can always lobby your school to upgrade their gym lights to flourescent. Just tell them that they will save money in the long run because they use less energy than the sodium lights that they currently have.
