Here are a few from Saturday afternoon. Another low light gym. Used some on camera flash.

Nice job OT, looks like you were using flash. I tried something different last night...I'll post shortly.

Wow, OT. Nice job. These look pretty good.

Lemme guess? Judging by the yellowish cast in the background of a few images (and the yellow light in one) you were dealing with more sodium lighting?

Hey OT,
Tell them to pull the covers off those lights....they are killing the light! That place would be really bright without them :)

This was another of the dungeons we have talked about. I did two things in these. You can tell the direct flash and on a couple of the others I tried some bounce flash at ISO 1600. Oh it would be nice to just walk in and shot a basketball game with out all the challenges.

Thats why the staff photographer and I battle over shooting at two of the schools. two have great lighting, two do not. One has great lighting at the football field, three do not, and I normally get the good one :)

I'm working on a deal to get myself on the sidelines at a mid-major college near here for a few games. Don't know if I can pull it off or not. I use to know several people in the admistration but most have retired and I don't have the in side track that I once had.

They are all awesome OT, but the very first one totally rocks! WOW!

When shooting basketball is using a flash ever a problem with coaches, officials etc?

JETA,

Flash shouldn't be a problem at all with basketball.
What you want to avoid are:
1: Multiple consecutive flash bursts
2: Flash when shooting down towards the net - up towards the net is OK as the players won't get direct flash in the eyes

I tend to use a diffuser and also run the flash in maual mode at low power no higher than 1/4.

One little tip:
Keep a copy of your states athletic association rules in your camera bag, that way if a coach or official try to stop you, you can show them the rules - many coaches and officials do not know the rules, especially those dealing with photographers.

Thanks JETA. I have just about decided that if I'm going to get decent basketball I'm going to have to use flash. I have never had a problem shooting flash at a basketball game. Never had a coach or offical say a word. Big negative is it takes away the advantages of the D2H and multiple frames per second. Now I am back to shooting one shot or maybe two each tripo into front court. I have to be much more selective with my shots.

I have decided that no flash equals no pics for me right now. I try to make sure I am to the side, and down from the players eye level. I never shoot the foul shot shooter. You can get some good shots of the guys boxing out, and they do not react until after the ball hits the goal, so a flash doesn't hurt then.

Thank you for all of the answers. You gave me many points I never thought about. Mind you I don't even own a flash, but I'm trying to take everything in as a newbie.

How does one find the state association rules? That's a great tip!

Thanks again.

JETA,

Try something like Washington State Athletic Association (putting in your state name instead) and search. or try:
