#2: Johnny Heidenriech and the Wild Goose

Good reach with the flash there !
Are you using the 580EX?
I was getting night photos at almost 100 metres on full manual power.

SW,
Yes, this is with the 580EX. I'm surprised at the reach this thing has. It takes some getting used to. I'm accustomed to a much shorter reach.

Well worth having, I may have to go and buy more - now I have the 1D as an excuse :)
I'm reduced to the built-in flash on the 20D for a while as the flash has to live on the 1D.

Do you really need the 580EX on both? My old 1D I use a Sunpak 433d I bought used for $55 and it works great. I only use it in manual anyway so I won't blow almost $400 for a 580EX on it.

Coming from the 20D which doesn't have the flash meter in the viewfinder ...
It depends what I'm doing.
If it's cars at night on the track, you're right I'd just use full power and sdjust aperture.
If I'm shooting drivers in the garage, yes - I want ETTL to make it easy and quick.
Same for the late evening balancing the flash against ambient, I want the speed.
Sometimes staking out the drivers makes it a snapshot - literally, in changing light.
I don't have time to keep adjusting my equipment and keep my eyes roving around the paddock for the drivers.
But if it was just cars on track, I agree a different flash will do the job just as well..

I also have in mind taking other photos though, where slaving them together will be useful.
Not sure whether to go back to wired flash for that, or try the built in wire-free slave functions.
Maybe cheaper Canon compatible flashes for that purpose since the 580 will be the main flash.

Hmmm, interesting, I don't use full power flash for races. I set shutter and aperature to where I want them and adjust flash power to get the results I want, normally thats around 1/4. About the only time I use full power is for figure 8 crossover action. Thats due to my location though, as far as possible from the action! I even use manual settings for driver shots. About the only time I use the ETTL is daylight auto fill, which works great.
