I haven't been on this forum for a while - mainly because I haven't shot anything worthwhile lately... I found this old cast iron fence in front of a house that's going to be torn down. Shot from about 15' away with an 80-200 f2.8 at 200mm and 2.8 (for short DOF) on an S2. I wanted a small DOF due to the stuff in the background behind the trees, but is it too small?

All the colours & tones work well. It is a classic composition showing the effects of DOP, but holds up well as a photo. Show us some more...

I like it as well. Perhaps try one from the same distance (from the posts), but standing a tad closer to the fence? Make the composition a bit more of a diagonal IOW?

Thanks to both of you. PuckJunkey - I looked at it that way (moving to my left a little) if I understand you correctly, but it seemed to make the four posts too squished together. I didn't shoot it that way but maybe I'll go back. Actually I will to work with this one again, the tulip will open in a couple of days. Probably shoot it wider and closer too.

More to this story - this four block area is going to be razed to make room for the new jail. Ground breaking isn't until next spring and they're already starting to tear down the old buildings. It's only a 10 minute drive from my house and I thought it would make a good long-term photo project. So this is day #1 for me.

Hello
I like the four posts, the composition is fine too. I may hav tried a series with different posts in focus to see which one provided the best feel.

Good luck on your photo project!!

So I went back yesterday to try a couple other ideas - some time between Saturday morning and Tuesday evening, someone stole the finial off of the farthest post! So much for that one... Since those shots are looking east, the evening sun would be on them for a different quality of light (as opposed to the other direction in the morning, same shooting spot - shooting the other direction won't leave a clean background).

I usually go for odd numbers instead of four, but with two on each side eliminating the last one just doesn't work. I did try a Sepia tone in Photoshop with a similar shot to the one above though...

I think this is the better of the fence shots. This one is framed nicely and contrast tones very good. Good work look forward to your project
