In playing with my camera,(Nikon D70s) I took some pictures in NEF, however, nothing I have will recognize NEF and I cannot get them off my disk. The next file size below the NEF is jpeg fine. I really do not want all my pictures saved as a jpeg but rather in RAW form but the only thing they have is NEF - RAW.
Does anyone know what program I need that will recognize NEF?? Even Photoshop CS2 is not picking it up. Thanks!!

You might want to checkout Adobe's Plugin section. Adobe is running awfully slow for me right now so I can't search much, but they definately should have something.

Jared is correct - you need to get an updated version of Camera Raw for CS2 - version 3.2 supports the D70s

A .NEF file is a Nikon RAW file. You will need software to convert it to a jpeg or tiff, but once you get used to this workflow you'll probably use it more and more. Nikon Capture will do it, but if you've already got CS2 then just download the update as others have said.

RAW files are specific to the camera and apparently there's enough of a change between the D70 which CS2 out of the box should read, and the D70s which requires the update.

There are pros/cons of using RAW over jpeg, and this subject has been discussed many times here - search and you'll find a lot of info on it.

Hi, Go to www.nikonusa.com (http://www.nikonusa.com) and download the program PhotoProject. Although not a great program, it is designed for nikon cameras. The other suggestions above are also great ideas especially the plugins for Photoshop CS or whatever your PS program is.

I have a D70 and ACDSee V8 will read the NEF files with no problems. I thought that the D70s produced the same format because the two cameras are really very similar.

I find that Nikon Capture is excellent for treating NEF files. I find I can go back to the original image that came out of the sensor and set most of the values the way I want (not the ISO setting, however..). Then I produce a JPEG with my corrections. The NEF is like a negative and the JPEG is the print, the finished result.
