View Full Version : The National Parks post
walterick 11-30-2005, 11:46 AM At first this thread was going to be a shot of Grand Canyon I took last October. I posted it in the Viewfinder to pass the time till I can start scanning slides and posting them.
Then I thought... why not make a National Parks post out of it? To go along with the theme posts we have here. I think we have enough photographers with enough passion for our National Parks (that includes the National Parks of ALL nations) to really make a nice thread here. All scenics, nature, wildlife, and landscapes are welcome, as long as it was taken inside a National Park. State parks, too, if you must. But let's keep the bulk of it on the national ones. Let's see the icons, the cliches, as well as the rarities, flora, and critters, too.
Okay enough blabbing let's see your National Parks! And don't hesitate if someone already posted a shot from your park.
Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA.

Here are a couple from the back road in Zion NP, Utah.
walterick 11-30-2005, 05:11 PM Chunk
Perfect example of what I was thinking for this post. I have always wanted to see Zion, hopefully now that I am basing in the Southwest I'll have my chance :)
And all the better that it was taken on a backroad :)
Let's see some more!
Chunk 11-30-2005, 05:14 PM Let's see some more!OK. Who else has seen this tree and can tell me which NP it's in?
mjs1973 12-01-2005, 05:04 AM These were all taken in Zion this spring. The first 2 are scans from Velvia. :) The first image is part of the trail that leads to the top of Angels Landing. Angels Landing is the big rock in the 2nd. :) I was attempting a digital IR look on the last one.
mjs1973 12-01-2005, 05:19 AM These were taken in Colorado National Monument, also this Spring.
srobb 12-01-2005, 06:04 AM Well, I'm a little overwhelmed at all these pics. Not sure mine are as colorful, but here they are. These were all taken at Red River Gorge area in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
jorgemonkey 12-01-2005, 06:36 AM Here are a couple of my offerings:
Arches National Park (UT)
Three from Yosemite National Park (CA)
Chunk 12-01-2005, 06:46 AM Very nice. I especially like the reflections in Yosemite. I hope I can get to that park soon.
Chunk 12-01-2005, 06:47 AM You've done an excellent job oc capturing the feel of that area of KY. I loved riding those roads this summer.
Chunk 12-01-2005, 06:57 AM Here's a panorama I stitched together from about 11 rotated shots of one of the views from the north rim. The original pano is 10600 pixels wide and 2382 pixels high. Following are 3 panels from it - left to right.
walterick 12-01-2005, 07:11 AM You guys are doing great :) All the shots are awesome. Glad I got to see some more of Zion! Chuck, I can't identify that tree, maybe someone else?
Here are:
Arches, Utah
Mt. Lassen, California
Great Sands, Colorado
Arches, Utah
All have been posted on pr before.
Chunk 12-01-2005, 07:33 AM I remember that footsteps pic. Those startrails are great - especially the one that looks like daylight.
brianc 12-01-2005, 08:18 AM Arches NP, UT
schrackman 12-01-2005, 11:51 AM Here's a couple from my archives. The first two are from Red Rock State Park, Az. The third is from Tuolomne Meadows, Yosemite.
paulnj 12-01-2005, 05:47 PM Every last image in this thread ROCKS.... EVERY LAST ONE!!!
I am very busy trying to edit my last job I shot between work, work and daily life, BUT I will did out a few AZ images and join in the fun soon :)
Who knows , maybe I will find some NJ NWR shots , Texas NWR shots...
walterick 12-01-2005, 07:34 PM Paul I agree. AWESOME images in this thread. Natural beauty and great photographers will always go well together :) Awaiting your contribution my friend.
I've kind of saturated the thread but here are a few more:
Two from Shenandoah, Virginia
Yosemite, California
Seqoia, California
All of which have been seen before here I believe.
Okay, I'm out. Bring it on, boys :)
schrackman 12-01-2005, 09:46 PM Since Rick started this with a Grand Canyon picture, I thought I would post a few of my own from November 2004. As you can tell from the last pic, my wife and I were freeeeezing. Like my "GC" beanie?
schrackman 12-01-2005, 10:06 PM Okay, two more for tonight then I'm done...these are from Joshua Tree Nat'l Park. The first one I believe is called the skull. The second is an Octillo tree.
mjs1973 12-02-2005, 05:22 AM Ok, my last batch from Zion. I think I have posted these before, at least in my gallery if not in the forums.
Chunk 12-02-2005, 06:45 AM Wow! What pop in those shots Ray. Terrific.
Chunk 12-02-2005, 07:45 AM OK. Who else has seen this tree and can tell me which NP it's in?Here are a few more hints.
photophorous 12-02-2005, 11:19 AM Chunk, I think I have a picture of the same tree at home (I'm at work). I was there in mid-October, and it was awesome! I'll see if I can post that shot and some others this evening. :)
Paul
Here are a few more hints.
photophorous 12-02-2005, 08:13 PM Okay, so I was wrong. I don't have that tree. Just a similar one. But here are a couple of my NP shots anyway. Zion and Bryce Canyon
Paul.
Chunk 12-03-2005, 04:08 AM Very Nice Paul. What a great sky in that Bryce Canyon shot. The days I was there in June was when they had some wildfires going on a ways to the west and the air was really smoky and dreary.
coachgns 12-03-2005, 08:49 AM This thread is really calling out to me: "Go West, Young Man!"
Well - not so young.
But the parks out there look incredible.
My EX wife nagged & nagged about getting to the Grand canyon. I always found excuses to not go (with her, anyway! :p ).
But now that my SO is an artist, I don't think I have that excuse.
I have hunfreds of pics from Acadia. When we were there this summer, the sun shone only onthe day we drove up there & the day we drove home. The entire week there it was too foggy to see very much. Went up for sunset several times, never could see it.
After seeing these pics, I am embarassed to post mine.
Except this one. I am embarassed by this one not because of the photography, but because of what a fellow Park visitor did here. Check out this bracnh: YECH! Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves.
And another that shows what the sky looked like every day.
mjs1973 12-03-2005, 02:23 PM Here are a few from Bryce.
Chunk 12-03-2005, 05:47 PM At Fontana Dam.
The last one was taken on the Blueridge Parkway.

The last one was taken on the Blueridge Parkway.
I love the Parkway pic Chunk. One of these day's I'm going to make a nice long bike trip and hit the Parkway. I had planned on doing it a couple years ago, but that fell through. :(
I don't know where your tree shot was taken... The color in the last "hint" pic you posted reminded me of Bryce, but I think I would have spotted that in one of my 3 trips there... Of course there are lots of other parks with those colors too.
Chunk 12-04-2005, 08:30 AM I love the Parkway pic Chunk.
Thanks Mike. I've only ridden a few sections of the BRP. This shot was taken in June on a rainy day on the westernmost section. There wasn't much light but I liked the feeling of what there was. I, too, hope to make a complete ride of the Parkway and then run the Skyline Drive north from there. Maybe next year. :D
You are right about the tree. I think it was at the top of the trail from the parking lot to Bryce point. What that guy in the tree pic is pointing at is this scene of the amphitheater so I guess you can be excused for not noticing the tree. the other shots are a closeup of the tree's root and a shot along the trail back to the parking lot.
mjs1973 12-04-2005, 08:54 AM Now I'm going to have to go back thru my pics of Bryce to see if I can find that tree. :)
mjs1973 12-05-2005, 04:00 PM A few more from this past spring.
paulnj 12-05-2005, 04:27 PM that coyote is great! the elk isn't too shabby either Mike!
mjs1973 12-05-2005, 04:33 PM that coyote is great! the elk isn't too shabby either Mike!
Thanks Paul. That coyote was a hoot to watch. He walked right down the middle of the road and stole a small dead rodent from a group of magpie's. They weren't real happy about that. :)
Chunk 12-05-2005, 07:54 PM A few more from this past spring.Great shots Mike. I was worried about those elk while riding through the western part of the park during dusk - they were moving off the mountain into the meadow in pretty good numbers and I didn't know if they'd get mad at a bike.
Here's some of the flora from the tundra region up on top the next morning and a wider view.
mjs1973 12-07-2005, 03:01 PM Nice shots Chunk! It was a little to early when I was there this spring so I don't have any flower picks to post form Rocky Mt. N.P. Here are a few more of what I do have tho.
dmdiaz 12-08-2005, 08:19 PM Hello all,
It's been a LONG TIME since I last posted. Here's a few for you: Yosemite and Grand Canyon.
Hope you enjoy them!
David
shutterman 12-14-2005, 05:48 AM Here are a few more....some views seem very familiar!

Speed 12-15-2005, 12:38 PM OK. Who else has seen this tree and can tell me which NP it's in?
Hey Chunk.
I don't have a clue about which NP it's in, but is that a bristlecone pine?
Speed 12-15-2005, 12:48 PM A couple from the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, and a couple from Fort Macon State Park.
Chunk 12-15-2005, 02:21 PM It's in Bryce Canyon and I'm not sure what species - Ponderosa maybe? It's completely dead and the roots are eroded out of the surrounding soil.
Chunk 12-15-2005, 02:28 PM There's no doubt that the blue ridge is properly named. Nice shots Speed.
