You basically have three choices - the D50, the Canon Digital Rebel or Digital Rebel XT, or the Olympus E300. I think they're all nice cameras and they all have different pros and cons. Basically, pick the flavor you like the best.

I'm curious about what you mean by, "like the fast shutter speed." Do you mean the actual shutter speed or the shutter response? Because you can get high shutter speeds with high-end compact cameras. And some even have very good shutter response. I tested the Konica Minolta DiMage A200 and it was very, very quick. But a digital SLR will always offer more control and better image quality. Of course, it will also require a larger investment.
