haha, time for a new body. The choices? The 1d and 20d. Sound eerily familiar? Except this time, I don't have the same amount of cash that JETA has. I'll be looking for a used ID. Not mark II, not 1ds, not mk II N, just a 1d. Every day I think I have my mind made up, but then i read something else and my opinion changes. I would be purchasing the camera probably this winter, as I am working about 3 jobs to try and save the money up for it (along with a sigma 70-200 and a 420ex). So here's the decision I'm trying to make...do I want to get the 20d and wait until that body has bitten the dust and buy a new, better body, or do I want to get the 1d and move into the more professional line (I've gotten to the point where I think the 1d would greatly benefit my photography)

Here's a list of my thoughts

-Apparently the 20d has much better noise levels than the 1d. I dont usually shoot at ISO 3200, but I sometimes do with my drebel. But I can usually manage to subside the noise enough that I am happy with the final product. See my volleyball shots for more info.

-5 fps v. 8 fps. This is one of the driving factors in my consideration of the 1d. I really REALLY want those extra 3 fps. There have been many times where I have looked at some of my shots and one shot is right before the perfect shot, and the next one is a split second after. Of course, this is with the 300d, but you get my picture. I've seen the burst on the 20d, and the photos still look like they're spaced out a bit too much.

-AF- Apparently, the 1 series is blazingly fast, at least that's what everyone I talk to says.

- Battery-life - A new issue that has been brought to my attention with the 1d, which apparently sucks up batteries pretty quickly. I think I can deal with this though, as I've been dealing with 1 battery in my drebel (which can hold 2 in its battery pack) for about a year now.

- 4mp v. 8mp. One of the biggest driving factors in my consideration of the 20d. Is 4 MP enough? that's my question. I will be getting into the photo selling business, and want to know if I can make 8x10 or even 11x14 prints out of a 4 MP shot. Apparently people have said you easily can, you just have to teach yourself to shoot full frame. I can do that, as I basically do now anyways. I hate cropping my photos. If I have to crop more than 1/3 of the photo, I don't even bother.

- Al Servo - They've both got it, so that's already a million times better than my 300d.

- sealed body - the 1d's got it. I could find this very beneficial, as I do live in NE, after all, where they say "if you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes." THere have been many situations where I am shooting and all of a sudden it begins sprinkling or raining a bit harder, and I have to put the camera away. While I realize I shouldn't be going splashing in puddles with any cmaera, the 1d seems like it would do much better with rain

- no zoom on prview mode on the 1d - a little annoyance, but I think it would help me, and would improve on my chimping habit.


So can anyone give me a recommendation? I shoot primarily sports (yeah, I do a bit of other stuff, but mainly sports. I'm an 8 varsity letter athlete from High School, so you could say I like sporting events just a bit. Any tips? I saw how helpful everyone was the JETA and I want in on that action! Just kidding. But really.

I deal with the battery issue by having two batteries for the 1D. When I bought the new MKII N I bought another battery and now have 4 of them. I keep a battery charger in the vehicle I take on jobs when using the 1D and if needed I can charge a battery either between jobs or during a job. I have a converter in the vehicle to plug the charger into. You can get around 3 hours out of a battery. Having the camera set to shut off in 1 minute saves a lot of battery. Also focusing with * will save a lot of battery as well over focusing off the shutter button ( CFn-4).

Another way to save some power is instead of erasing photos fformat the disk, it's quicker and better anyway. And don't look at each photo, that kills the battery the fastest.

I do not agree that the 20D has better noise than the 1D in real world use. You need more ISO on the 20D when the light starts going away than on the 1D, thereby cancelling the supposed edge the 20D has, tests do not take into account things like the sun going down and dealing with changing light like you get in the real world. Tests mean nothing to me, I prefer actual use results.

AF in the 1D kicks the 20D's hiney! And the MK II is faster yet (sorry, had to toss that iin) but the AF is more acurate as well.

Another thing not mentioned is write speed is faster as well.

write speed? oh really? so you mean i could actually take advantage of the ultra II card that I have that still takes like 2-3 seconds to record an image? wow. Never thought I'd see the day.

ok, I think I have finally made my decision. I'll be purchasing a used 1d this winter as soon as I make enough money for it. I'm already excited for it! And of course, if you know anyone who wants to get rid of one, point them my way! And who needs a 1d as a backup when you've got a 300d? yeah, that's righht, I'm talking to you.

Check out Roberts Distributors in Indy (they have a website too). They get a lot of good used 1D's, and some real good prices ranging from $800 to $1600 (higher price better camera looks wise and fewer shots).

Yeah, yeah, I know that was intended for me :) , sorry bud but I need to keep that for a backup and to use on days like the football state championships. I'll be using it with a wide angle lens for team shots. I do have the 300D for sale though! The 300D is ok for snap shots and some other stuff but not for sports and nature (unless your target is close and not moving).
Plus, how can I make the staff photographer at the paper look bad without having two 1D bodies and big white lenses hanging off em? There have already been comments...and HE still hasn't figured it out! I guess I'll just have to walk in the office one Friday night with both cameras hanging off my shoulder :) Funny part is everyone but him knows about it, he keeps complaining my pictures load slowly now, yet doesn't realize they went from 11mb to 23mb in Photoshop! All he has to do is open properties and he'll see Canon 1D MKII N....doh!
I even know he is getting a MKII N next year...he doesn't! :D .... now if they would just hire me full time.....

hahaha...don't we all? I need help thats for sure :rolleyes: , like tonight, we have tornado warnings and such all over the area and I have to go shoot a girls basketball game :confused: while the other affected areas have all cancelled their games :cool: this one school apparently insists on going ahead with the game :( meanwhile my yard is flooded from the rains we have had since last night :mad: and they are calling for 2 more inches of rain tonight :mad: and cold tonight after the next front moves through around 9 or 10pm.
Oh goody, now they are saying winds up to 65+ mph. Hail up to 1"....and lots of rain :eek:
Heck, I don't have all the branches picked up from the last storm :o
Whats worse.... I LOVE bad weather :confused: so I know theres something wrong with me :o I'd rather be out taking pictures of the storm, not in a gym :confused:
