Dude that moth? is bang'in looking !
Thanks Paul!
It's a skipper.
paulnj 11-03-2005, 05:48 AM AH, we get alot of silver-spotted skippers here :)
SmartWombat 11-03-2005, 12:05 PM It's a skipper.
Interesting, all the skipper species here in the UK hold their wings like K that.
Hindwings flas, forewings at 45 degrees to horizontal.
This skipper is different it seems, as all the wings are at 45 degrees.
paulnj 11-03-2005, 12:18 PM I am not a bug guy, though they do have wings usually...HMMMMM ;)
Is this a silver spotted skipper by any chance? My birding buddy always talks about them on his butterfly bush .

I'm not really sure what you have there, sorta the LBJ of the butterfly world, but it ain't the Silver-spotted Skipper, (Epargyreus clarus)...

Well if you had looked at the link I put up you would have seen that this indeed is a Silver-Spotted Skipper... :p
paulnj 11-03-2005, 04:09 PM I did look at the link skippy :) I figure if 3 species of crow look alike, why not 2 skippers?
paulnj 11-03-2005, 04:50 PM Is my flutterby a Aphrodite Fritillary (Speyeria aphrodite) maybe? I think so(no a great spangled due to missing the forewing spot)
schrackman 11-03-2005, 09:00 PM Here's a California species that I shot last year. Not sure which species it is, so perhaps someone can help to identify it.
SmartWombat 11-04-2005, 12:08 PM Now that is more like our skippers :)
Same orange/brown colours, same habit with the hindwings flat and forewings at 45 degrees.
Can't identify US species though, worry.

Speyeria aphrodite, is what I was leaning toward, but I was tired when I looked it up. I am confidant in saying it is now.

Looks like you have a, Fiery Skipper (Hylephila phyleus).
paulnj 11-04-2005, 05:48 PM Cool image Ray!
