View Full Version : ...November Photo Project: The Cemetery...
Well it's that time again. It's the new Photo Project!
"The Cemetery"
This is a slight change from what I had originally planned, but I was inspired by a show I had seen on PBS called "A Cemetery Special", and man I just couldn't wait to get out a visit some dead folks. So guess what my friends, now it's your turn!
Get out there and get some pictures of you favorite "End Of The World" hang out!
So come on guys lets have even more business this month!
Hope this fits - I'll be shooting more in cemetaries - but here is my first.
This isn't the best technically speaking - but it sure is old. ;)

OldSchool 10-31-2005, 12:00 PM And it's not even November yet. Very nice Liz...

This was taken at the Jacksonville Memorial Gardens in Orange Park, Florida.
It was one little part of a small array of tiny monuments to a dead child.

Nice Head stone Liz. I really dig the 18th century lingo on it!
Thanks Almo,
Actually I was out yesterday (Sunday) for about an hour and ran across a very old cemetary. I had a difficult time with the lighting as it was mid-afternoon and the sun was extremely bright - with the shadows from the trees in the cemetary there was too much contrast, so I wasn't pleased with any my shots. This was a "good" one.

This is a nice shot - you did great with the lighting - I should have brought you along to help with the contrast on my shots.
It's very nice.

Well, technically the point of the project is to inspire and prompt you to go out and shoot something new, but I won't tell if you don't... ;)

In that case...lol, here's a couple!
mjs1973 11-05-2005, 02:05 PM I took a ride in the rain this afternoon and found this little cemetary out in the country.

Oh man! The first and third are astounding! That angel looks as though it just fluttered up and had a seat to look at that grave. You used the rain and light very well.
Iguanamom 11-05-2005, 02:30 PM After a long absence I have returned to photography, galvanized by my new digital SLR. And what do I see - a project with my favorite subject!!
Here are some shots I took at a small graveyard just down the road from my house. Still getting the hang of this digital stuff, so pardon my uploads aren't pretty.
Here is another shot from the same spot I found the little headless angel.

Thanks for the kind words Almo. Here's another version from today. It was bright and sunny today so I did a little selective desaturation to add a little "mood" to the image.
mjs1973 11-06-2005, 01:32 PM From the same cemetary as the others.
Iguanamom 11-08-2005, 03:11 PM Here's another from the digital body. Difficult lighting, but I work on B Island and it's sometimes hard to get away from my desk when the light is good. {eyeroll} Damn employers and their priorities.
Jacqui 11-09-2005, 11:47 AM This is from the Big Island of Hawaii.
When I realized whom I was standing amongst it was all I could do to keep my eyes from welling up.
It's kinda hard to tell by this image, but the markers in this small section are only a third the size of the others in the cemetery. And I swear the air feels different there.

wow, those are some awesome shots there almo!
here's three more from this morning.
The first shot is from the Col. John McCrae memoral (yes, the same Col. McCrae that wrote "In Flanders Field"). The second one is of a tombstore with a rather worn canadian flag. The last is of a piper who was with the rememberance day service and would pipe by your loved one's grave. (All taken with the Dimage Z2)
CB Photo 11-12-2005, 02:07 AM Here are a couple of shots from Normandy, I thought with the war in Iraq it may be fitting to post something from a war memorial. Hope these fit in.
Iguanamom 11-13-2005, 08:13 AM Today I went to a nearby pet cemetery.
adina 11-14-2005, 05:32 PM Almo,

JamesV 11-20-2005, 12:13 PM Here are some shots that I took yesterday.
JamesV 11-20-2005, 12:19 PM Welcome Melissa, it's always good for people to join in. I really like the first shot.
Payne that shot is awesome! Love the angle.
mmedlyn 11-21-2005, 02:25 AM Thank you. I have more taken this month but I wonder if there is a limit to how many I can post.
JamesV 11-21-2005, 03:22 AM Melissa, you can post as many pictures as you want. If you feel uncomfortable about doing that you can post a few then put in a link to your "My Gallery" and have the rest of your pictures in that location. Also I took a look at your link, you have two cute daughters. Keep the pictures coming.
payn817 11-21-2005, 04:25 AM Thanks Almo and Axle!!
What could be better than such a complimen from the Minolta Warrior, and the guy whose work is displayed on my wall (and one of my fav photogs) :D
I definately feel more comfortable, capable, and confident using the SLR. Thnks again guys!
mmedlyn 11-22-2005, 02:11 AM Thanks again James. Here are a couple more that I like.

CLKunst 11-27-2005, 12:31 PM These are the last two I swear! ;) This has been such a fun project I may continue to do this forever. LOL!
These pictures aren't technically from a cemetery, more of a roadside shrine to where someone drove off the mountain outside of Colorado Springs but I thought the feeling of sacred ground still carried.
JamesV 11-28-2005, 06:15 PM Here is a couple more shoot from over the weekend.
sportsman 11-30-2005, 02:05 PM I'm surprised at how many cemetary pictures that i actually have

Cheers!
