View Full Version : lizard
2kids2shoot 10-26-2005, 09:21 PM I don't remember what kind of a lizard this was. My kids were dragging me on the arm to go look at the mole rats. Sheeesh - you'd think I went to the zoo for them or something. Thought he was pretty handsome though, in a lizardy sort of way...
Peter_AUS 10-27-2005, 12:37 AM Could be a Blue Tounge Lizard, hard to say with only the front half really to go on.
paulnj 10-27-2005, 05:29 AM It may very well be an african species of lizard from the uromastyx family ;)
As Pete said though, the whole body would help with ID.
2kids2shoot 10-27-2005, 10:24 AM I checked out the zoo website. No specific detail on this lizard, just that he comes from East African grass plains.
paulnj 10-27-2005, 01:11 PM I am sticking with my ID ;)
Maybe ALMO can get over hear and add his two cents, since he too is a reptile lover.
Peter_AUS 10-27-2005, 03:13 PM Definately not a Blue Tounge then and Paul is probably correct.
paulnj 10-27-2005, 05:31 PM Pete,
The blue tounged skink(sp?) has a very smooth appearance.
Peter_AUS 10-27-2005, 06:53 PM Yeah you are probably right, just looked at some images on aussie websites, but then this could have been a cousin couldn't it.
Well I can assure you this is not a blue tongue, They look nothing like this at all (having a ds that bred them at one stage!!)
This looks to me like a water monitor or lace monitor. Not 100% but pretty sure.
I've included a Stumpy Tail. Took this on our recent holidays. This is similar looking to a blue tongue but the bluey is not quite as dark or 'stoney' looking.

paulnj 10-29-2005, 06:27 AM ah..... but the original lizard is AFRICAN ;) Nice shingleback? though tink.
my question now is.

Hey, how 'bout a lizard ID thread, too? Just kidding, but here's my contribution ...

2kids2shoot 10-29-2005, 10:57 PM As I recall, he wasn't that big. The body was maybe 12 inches (I think that's about 28 cm). I can't remember what the tail looks like. It was the only time I'd ever seen him in the display. I may be going to the zoo tomorrow if it not raining too hard (Oregon in October - fat chance) so I'll be sure to see if he/she's there.

The tail would be stubby, fat, and spiky. If he wasn't as healthy as he looks then the tail might be thinner than normal. But expect stubby and spiky.
Here is a picture of Max. A Uro from a petshop I used to frequent in Mi..
