I am not into portrait but I find this picture to be quite creative. I really like your idea here. My only concern is that the entire picture looks a bit "muted". I'd like the bright areas to be brighter.

I am glad to hear that you like it. This is actually a fast and dirty edit in Photoshop CS2. I manually adjusted the levels by bringing the right cursor (highlights) to the left.
